Russia attacked Ukraine with a hypersonic Oreshnik missile overnight Thursday, a rare use of one of its most advanced weapons during the latest onslaught targeting the country amid freezing temperatures.
The strike marks the first time in more than a year that Moscow has unleashed the Oreshnik, which can contain multiple warheads and carry either conventional or nuclear payloads.
“The Russian Armed Forces launched a massive strike with high-precision long-range land- and sea-based weapons, including the Oreshnik mobile medium-range ground-based missile system,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement Friday.
While Russia did not say where the Oreshnik hit, several explosions and a ballistic missile strike on a critical infrastructure facility were reported by authorities in the western city of Lviv.
The missile was “moving at a speed of about 13,000 kilometers per hour along a ballistic trajectory,” an earlier statement from the Air Command “West” of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said. It added the type of missile would be determined after its components had been examined.
A speed of 13,000 kilometers per hour is about 10 times the speed of sound.
The Oreshnik can reach of those kinds of speeds, with a range that allows it to reach all of Europe, Russia’s missile forces chief has said.
Last month, Russia released video of what it said was the deployment of the Oreshnik missile system on the territory of close ally Belarus. Moscow used it for the first time in November 2024, striking the Ukrainian city of Dnipro even though the weapon was not fully developed at the time.
Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha said Friday that “such a strike close to EU and NATO border is a grave threat to the security on the European continent and a test for the transatlantic community,” in a post on X.
“We demand strong responses to Russia’s reckless actions.”
Russia said it launched its latest attack in response to Ukraine’s purported attempt to hit Russian President Vladimir Putin’s home last month.
The CIA has assessed Ukraine was not targeting a residence used by Putin, according to US officials. Moscow’s claim that it was came amid intensive talks led by US President Donald Trump and his envoys to end the war in Ukraine
The Oreshnik strike came hours after Moscow repeated that European troops deployed to Ukraine as part of any future peace deal would be considered “legitimate targets,” and the seizing of a Russian-flagged oil tanker by the United States on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia fired 36 missiles and 242 drones in total, overnight Thursday.
In Kyiv, a CNN reporter said that the attack began around midnight, starting with multiple drone strikes on residential buildings.
Streetlights flickered before large parts of the city were plunged into darkness, as a thick fog settled over the streets and temperatures plummeted to –5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit).
Four people were killed and 10 others wounded in the attack, according to the city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko, who said “critical infrastructure” had also been damaged.
There was “no information” about casualties following the missile strike on Lviv, mayor Andriy Sadovyi wrote on Telegram. “Civilian facilities and residential buildings in the city have not been affected,” he said.
Russia has been pounding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with drones and missiles in recent weeks, a tactic used in previous winters. The strikes have left tens of thousands of people across the country without power or heating amid freezing winter temperatures. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the aim of such attacks is “to create chaos and apply psychological pressure on the population.”
The attacks also come as Russia doubled down on its longstanding position of declaring Western forces in Ukraine “legitimate targets” on Thursday, days after France and the UK pledged to send troops there in the event of a peace deal. Russia has long opposed the presence of any Western troops in Ukraine.
And on Wednesday the United States forces boarded and seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the Atlantic Ocean following a weeks-long chase on the high seas which has escalated tensions with Moscow and piled further pressure on its ally Venezuela.
Russia condemned the seizure, with its transport ministry arguing “no state has the right to use force against vessels that are properly registered in the jurisdictions of other nations” under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, a treaty which the US has not signed.
Putin is yet to comment on the developments related to the tanker, which the US had previously sanctioned for carrying illicit Iranian oil.

I just don’t believe any of this, whatsoever. It’s all BS.
From AI:
“Construction of the GORO Mountain Resort, a major new ski resort in western Ukraine, officially began on October 23, 2024, marking the start of the project after years of delays due to the Russian invasion and unresolved land issues.
This development is part of a larger $1.5 billion investment by Ukraine’s OKKO Group, with the first phase expected to be completed between 2028 and 2029.
The GORO Mountain Resort project was initially proposed in 2017 and had planned construction start dates in 2019 and early 2022, but both were postponed due to the pandemic and the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
As of January 2026, construction is ongoing, with the first phase involving five hotel complexes and over 1,100 rooms scheduled for completion by 2028–2029.
The resort will span nearly 1,200 hectares, including 360 hectares dedicated to ski infrastructure and over 800 hectares for hotels and recreational facilities, with plans for 25 hotels and 5,500 rooms in total.
The project includes a 2.8 km long gondola lift and a 3.8 km long ski slope, making it Ukraine’s largest and most ambitious ski development to date.”
Who builds a ski resort during a war? Clearly this is where ‘some’ of the billions that the west have given them has gone, with the rest, most likely, going into bankers, corporatists and politicians’ pockets. It’s one big theft on a colossal scale, not quite as big as the 10th September heist of $2.3trillion though, a day before 9/11, as noted in a speech by Donald Rumsfeld. Just blatant deception and theft of billions, by Ukraine and no one gives a sh*t!
And this shows that Putin’s in on the pantomime, well when I say Putin, Putin’s lookalike. They’ve managed to, yet again, fool the public into thinking that Putin won’t get involved in defending Iran, because it’s tied up in a war with Ukraine. Nonsense.
Trump’s America has taken a fifth tanker in the Caribbean. Perhaps going for so many so soon is because word is Russia and China have announced they will send escorts for their commercial vessels to protect them from this 17th century piracy, so they’re grabbing a few unescorted vessels now but will stop this once when they’re escorted, then Trump can still brag about how many they stole. I lack confidence in Russia but China is an unknown quantity regards piracy on the high seas.
At least Hitler had the courtesy to call it conquest while Trump dare only call it “law”.

Labour has been blasted for paying almost £40million to migrants since Keir Starmer came to power, a bombshell report has revealed.
Critics have accused the Government of paying eye-watering “ransom payments” to those who have come to Britain, instead of increasing enforced & controlled returns. The criticism comes after a new report found evidence Labour has spent more money on Voluntary Assisted Returns (VARS) than on physical deportations.
Some deportees have come back several times for more payments
The scheme provides travel, housing and financial support to migrants, helping them return home.
The Home Office spending was uncovered in research carried out for GB News by the Centre for Migration Control (CMC).

LOL. He doesn’t believe whatever, but he believes “AI”. Doesn’t know a thing about it, but he believes it.
fyu,
Can you please explain to me why Ukraine has been building a ski resort if they’re in the middle of a war? The AI was simply about the construction of the ski resort and absolutely nothing else. So, how about you actually answer instead of launching into some strawman argument instead? Am I correct, when I stated, that a $1.2billion ski resort being built in Ukraine? Am I also correct on why on earth, would a country in the middle of a war, be building a ski resort, more so when it’s going around the west with a begging bowl, with around $216billion collected so far since the start of the war in 2022?
Stick to the argument, not logical fallacies.
