Yasen-M-class submarine
Pravda – Aug 29, 2025
Russia has just upped the stakes in the Arctic with the launch of its newest Yasen-M-class submarine, Perm, a nuclear-powered beast armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles.
This isn’t just another sub—it’s a bold statement of Moscow’s intent to dominate the Arctic, a region critical for global security and resources. While the US has been distracted by conflicts like Ukraine, Russia is making strategic moves in the vital region.
The Perm, launched on March 27, 2025, at Sevmash Shipyard and now in sea trials, is the first Yasen-M-class sub designed specifically to carry Zircon hypersonic missiles as standard.
These missiles, traveling at Mach 9 with a 560-mile range, can strike naval or land targets with either conventional or nuclear warheads.
Their speed and maneuverability make them nearly impossible to intercept, leaving the US and NATO without a clear defense.
The Perm’s arsenal also includes 32 missiles in 8 silos, 10 torpedo tubes, and an IGLA-M SAM battery, all operated by a lean crew of 64 thanks to advanced automation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has openly emphasized the Arctic’s importance, noting that Russia’s strategic submarines can vanish under the ice, evading radars—a clear military advantage.
Since planting a flag on the Arctic seafloor in 2007, Russia has prioritized the region, while the US has lagged behind. The Perm joins five other Yasen-M subs, with more like Ulyanovsk and Voronezh on the way, all set to carry Zircons. This signals a shift toward hypersonic dominance in Russia’s naval strategy.
The Arctic is no longer a secondary theater—it’s a frontline where Russia is gaining ground. With Zircon-armed subs like Perm prowling under the ice, the US Navy faces a daunting challenge.

That is a very lean crew, when at least 6 are in the galley flipping burgers.
LOL..
I love the term ‘secondary theatre’..it’s so apt…

” region critical for global security and resources.”
What utter drivel.
It’s a minerals deal at best. Less important than Australia.
What is the genesis of this? In the 1990s, there was an international agreement to map the continental shelves in the Arctic region, in order to assist in territorial disputes. I recall reading an interview with one of the geographers, who stated that while the “scientific” teams/crews of all countries involved was good and information/data was shared, the political pressures were always present. In 2007, a Russian politician engineered the stunt of the placement of the Russian flag on the sea floor under the North Pole. Things accelerated from there. The US, in 2023, laid claim to territory in the Beaufort Sea and the Bering Sea. The territory in the Bering Sea overlaps a Canadian claim, which Canada says was based on the joint study. The US claim to territory is greater than the claims of all of the rest of the countries combined. The US does not recognize the Northwest Passage, entirely within Canadian territory as Canadian waters, but International Waters. By extension, without specifically stating so, the US does not recognize the Russian passage as Russian, rather International Waters. There is no danger to security other than the one created by the US in order to attempt to keep the Empire intact.
