In April 2022 Boris Johnson went to Kiev at the behest of the Biden administration. At the time Ukraine was on the verge of signing a peace deal with Moscow and Johnson was sent to persuade Zelensky from signing with promises of unwavering support. Much has changed since then and many hundreds of thousands have died and Ukraine has nothing to show for their sacrifice. Trump’s criticism ignores this whole shameful episode and the West’s role in prolonging the war. Ed.

Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Volodymyr Zelensky, labelling him a “dictator” for not holding elections.

The US president said in a post on his Truth Social that the Ukrainian president had done a “terrible job” and said he needed to “move fast or he is not going to have a country left”.

“I love Ukraine, but Zelenskyy has done a terrible job, his Country is shattered, and MILLIONS have unnecessarily died – And so it continues…” Mr Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

He also accused Mr Zelensky of “playing Biden ‘like a fiddle’” and suggested he wanted to “keep the gravy train going”, referring to the billions of dollars in military aid donated to Kyiv by Washington.

The US president’s comments come after he accused Ukraine of starting the war with Russia.

“Well, you’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it three years…you should have never started it,” he said after responding to claims Kyiv had been frozen out of peace negotiations.

In response, Mr Zelensky accused the US president of living in a “disinformation bubble”.
