The Bank of England announced yesterday that they will be launching a “digital pound lab” to “experiment” with different “use-cases” and set-ups of the UK’s planned Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
This signals the end of the “consultation and response phase” and the beginning of the “design phase”, according to the BoE’s website.
This is the first real news on the digital currency front for some time.
In fact, after an action-packed 2023 saw at least 135 of the world’s 197 nation states developing a digital currency, things have been eerily quiet on that front. Some nations – including Japan and Canada – have paused or even entirely scrapped CBDC development.
Even the Bank of England’s announcement of the lab contains much softer language than the previously energetic and enthusiastic endorsements of digital currency. Noting the CBDC would be “used alongside banknotes” instead of replacing them, and that “No decision has been made on whether to proceed with a digital pound.”
Whether this is due to perceived public resistance to the idea, unexpected technological limitations, or some change in strategy we can’t know – it could easily be a mix of all three.
Still, it’s a reminder that digital currency likely remains the long-term goal.
But well done to all awakened people who have contributed to halting the roll-out thus far.

Church of England clear-out needed following Makin Review, says ex-minister
Story by Richard WheelerChurch of England (CoE) leaders named in an abuse scandal report should be removed from their jobs, according to a former cabinet minister. who said
young boys need to be kept safe from homosexuals
Sir Gavin Williamson warned “so few people” have been held to account following the publication of the independent Makin Review, which said barrister John Smyth’s “abhorrent” abuse of more than 100 boys and young men was covered up within the CoE for years. Justin Welby officially quit as Archbishop of Canterbury earlier this month, having announced in November he would resign following days of pressure after the review concluded that Smyth might have been brought to justice had Mr Welby reported the abuser and others to police in 2013.
Those responsible must be held to account Labour MP Marsha de Cordova
Several other names were noted in the report for their failings, with Conservative MP Sir Gavin suggesting they should also face action.
Labour MP Marsha de Cordova, the Church of England’s Commons representative, said the church has an “enormous amount of work to do to create a culture shift” and “those responsible must be held to account”.
The Church’s National Safeguarding Team is looking into the actions of dozens of homosexual officials who were named in the review, with some having already been asked to step back from church activities while the process is under way.

The scum at the top can’t figure out how to hide the drug money and back handers with a digital currency. Ha Ha Ha.
Like many other concepts a digital currency through which every monetary exchange should pass is a concept that will not work away from the drawing board into and the real world. It’s a whole new “thing”, not something that’s been around a while with improvements constantly updating it.
We’ve had barter and exchange and then money for thousands of years which have worked well because they’re organic and generally serve both or all parties involved; but digital currency demands that a third party, not involved in the trade, is the final arbiter of whether that trade can happen or not; and no trade can happen without that third party. It takes the piss, and like any other digital system which operates on tick boxes and permissions, it cannot foresee every up and down (how will partial discounts for inferior goods work?) and so it cannot work as well as simply handing over cash or other negotiable instrument like a cheque or postal order can. Sticking their nose in every single trade just can’t be made to work.
Even if digital can work 99% of the time it’s that 1% that’s really going to screw it all up. It’s money, and as any accountant would tell us the figures have to be right 100% at the end of the day, and that’s just not going to happen enough with digital. It’s a flawed concept that can’t have those problems figured out later.
