Anti-tank ‘Hedgehog’ barriers, modern surveillance systems and trenches – it is all part of Poland’s fortification of its border with Russia over fears of a broader conflict in Europe.
Worth around £2 billion, ‘East Shield’ is the largest programme of its nature on the continent since the end of World War II.
It aims to fortify Poland’s borders with Belarus, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to deter Vladimir Putin’s imperialist ambitions.
Prime minister Donald Tusk, who traveled today to inspect progress in the construction of the military fortifications, called it ‘an investment in peace.’
Standing in front of concrete anti-tank barriers, he told a news conference: ‘The better the Polish border is guarded, the more difficult it is to access for those with bad intentions.’
The country has been at the mercy of aggressive neighbors over the past centuries and has become a leading European voice for security at a time when France and Germany are weakened by internal political problems.
Tusk’s government aims to spend 4.7% of its gross domestic product on defence next year, making the country one of Nato’s leaders in defence spending.
Its borders with Russia, Belarus – as well as Ukraine – are the easternmost external borders of both the European Union and Nato.
Tusk said he expected the East Shield to eventually be expanded to protect the small Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
‘Everything we are doing here – and we will also be doing this on the border with Belarus and Ukraine – is to deter and discourage a potential aggressor, which is why it is truly an investment in peace,’ Tusk said.
‘We will spend billions of zlotys on this, but right now the whole of Europe is observing these investments and our actions with great satisfaction and will support them if necessary.’
Poland is not alone in planning for a conflict in Europe. So far, Germany is drawing up ‘bunker plans’ in case of a bombing.
It is developing an app to help people locate the nearest shelter in event of an attack.
Meanwhile, Sweden is distributing a 32-page pamphlet titled ‘In case of a crisis or war’ because of what the government calls a worsening security situation.
In neighbouring Finland, half a million people have already downloaded an emergency preparedness guide.
And during the summer, Denmark emailed adults with details on the water, food and medicine they would need to get through a crisis for three days.

The UK’s housing crisis is spiraling out of control, and it’s not because we don’t have enough homes – it’s because of an unchecked immigration crisis that’s putting British young people at the back of the queue.
It’s been suggested that six out of seven new homes Labour plans to build will go to migrants. Every home handed to a migrant is one less for young Brits struggling to get on the property ladder. Labour’s ambitious plan to build 3.5 million homes on green belt land and flood plains might sound like the solution to our housing woes. But if 2.5 million migrants are allowed into the country during the same period, what’s the point? Even if the Government could pull off such a feat – which would require building 900 homes per day with an army of 300,000 workers – it wouldn’t solve the problem. The numbers just don’t add up.
We do not have enough jobs homes or opportunities for our own folk why import in more people ?
In 2023/2024 alone, over 33,000 non-UK lead tenants accessed new social housing lettings. These are homes that could have gone to young English families, many of whom are living in overcrowded conditions or on endless waiting lists. Young people are being priced out of the market, left unable to rent, let alone buy.
The truth is, our generation is paying the price for decades of political decisions that sold out our futures for the sake of cheap labour. Governments, past and present, have let immigration spiral out of control, prioritizing short-term economic gains over long-term stability.
And while migrants are being housed and living nicely on our benefit system, young Brits are stuck living with their parents, unable to achieve the standard of living their parents enjoyed.
It’s not just housing. Mass immigration is straining every aspect of life in the UK. Public services are buckling under the pressure, with schools, hospitals, and transport networks pushed to their limits. Instead of investing in our young people and equipping them with skills, the government has chosen to import workers and giving them everything
The policy of dumbing down our youth has made the job market fiercely competitive, particularly for low-skilled roles, leaving many young Brits out in the cold.
Think about it: if your bath is overflowing, you don’t start mopping up the water while the tap is still running, you turn off the tap first. But that’s exactly what the government is not doing.
Throwing money at public services or building more migrant homes will get us nowhere, unless we “turn off the immigration tap” first.
There’s another uncomfortable reality that many young people are afraid to talk about: crime. Britain is becoming more dangerous, and it’s no coincidence. In just one year, foreign criminals who avoided deportation committed 10,000 offences, with one in four going on to reoffend after being released.

So while young Brits are struggling to make ends meet, the government is spending billions to deal with the consequences of mass migration. Last year, £5.4 billion was spent on illegal migrant costs, with another £726 million going toward universal credit for migrant scroungers
This is money coming straight out of the pockets of young taxpayers – many of whom can’t afford to leave their parents’ homes, let alone start families of their own. For a generation already burdened with student debt, stagnant wages, and sky-high rent, this feels like a slap in the face.
The reality is clear: mass immigration is harming the future of Britain’s young people. It’s making it harder to find jobs, buy homes, access public services, and feel safe in our communities. And to add insult to injury, we’re being taxed relentlessly to foot the bill for the migrants
The unchecked, uncontrolled immigration we’ve seen over the past decade is a political choice – and one that’s costing my generation dearly.
Young people across Europe and the US are waking up to this reality, turning to the right as they realise the scale of the issue.
In the UK, it’s time for Sir Keir Starmer wake up and stopped the slow slide into communism and make the tough decisions that are necessary.
The truth is we will never know the truth.

Poland (and England) was instrumental in starting WW2. They know it. The Polish killing and robbing of ethnic Germans forced Hitlers hand. They refused to negotiate thinking England had their back. England couldn’t defend itself much less Poland. Hitler “allowed” the English military run for the border by allowing them to return to England. Of course that is not mentioned in the movies of those brave English soldiers hightailing it out of Europe with the German army in pursuit. Hitler did not want a war with England. Poland today is going to be instrumental in WW3 when they ought to mind their own business and stop their bellicose war talk. Russia has no interest in broke and whining Western Europe. The USSR dumped Eastern Europe as they were an albatross around the neck.

It is encouraging to see a post such as the one from ken above concerning WW2 and truth. It is very true that Hitler proposed two generous work arounds to solve the Danzig Corridor impasse. Danzig was stolen from Germany and given to Poland post WW1. For some reason, probably interference from Britain, that Poland turned them down and ensured war for this and other reasons as ken stated. Also, it should be noted of the proposal Hitler put to Britain in July 1940 to end the war, with Britain saving face and its empire. Everyone would have been a winner. But warmonger Churchill even turned that down. We now look at the state Europe is in today due to the fanaticism of certain WW2 leaders wanting and destroying Germany in another war. To quote General George S. Patton at the end of the war: “we defeated the wrong enemy” – you certainly did.
