Putin is ready to halt the war in Ukraine with ceasefire that recognises current battlefield lines – but will fight on if the West does not respond

Vladimir Putin is ready to halt the war in Ukraine if a negotiated ceasefire that recognises the current battlefield lines can be agreed, Russian sources claim.
Three of the sources, familiar with discussions in Putin’s entourage, told Reuters the veteran Russian leader had expressed frustration to a small group of advisers about what he views as Western-backed attempts to stymie negotiations and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s decision to rule out talks.
‘Putin can fight for as long as it takes, but Putin is also ready for a ceasefire to freeze the war,’ said another of the insiders, a senior Russian source who has worked with Putin and has knowledge of top level conversations in the Kremlin.
He, like the others cited in this story, spoke on condition of anonymity given the matter’s sensitivity.
Reuters spoke to a total of five people who work with or have worked with Putin at a senior level in the political and business worlds.
The fifth source did not comment on freezing the war at the current frontlines.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in response to a request for comment, said the Kremlin chief had repeatedly made clear Russia was open to dialogue to achieve its goals, saying the country did not want an eternal war.
Ukraine’s foreign and defence ministries did not respond to questions.
The appointment last week of economist Andrei Belousov as Russia’s defence minister was seen by some Western military and political analysts as placing the Russian economy on a permanent war footing in order to win a protracted conflict.

It followed sustained battlefield pressure and territorial advances by Russia in recent weeks.
However, the sources said that Putin, re-elected in March for a new six-year term, would rather use Russia’s current momentum to put the war behind him.
They did not directly comment on the new defence minister.
Based on their knowledge of conversations in the upper ranks of the Kremlin, two of the sources said Putin was of the view that gains in the war so far were enough to sell a victory to the Russian people.
Europe’s biggest ground conflict since World War Two has cost tens of thousands of lives on both sides and led to sweeping Western sanctions on Russia’s economy.
Three sources said Putin understood any dramatic new advances would require another nationwide mobilisation, which he didn’t want, with one source, who knows the Russian president, saying his popularity dipped after the first mobilisation in September 2022.
The national call up spooked part of the population in Russia, triggering hundreds of thousands of draft age men to leave the country. Polls showed Putin’s popularity falling by several points.
Peskov said Russia had no need for mobilisation and was instead recruiting volunteer contractors to the armed forces. The prospect of a ceasefire, or even peace talks, currently seems remote.
Zelensky has repeatedly said peace on Putin’s terms is a non-starter. He has vowed to retake lost territory, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. He signed a decree in 2022 that formally declared any talks with Putin ‘impossible.’
One of the sources predicted no agreement could happen while Zelensky was in power, unless Russia bypassed him and struck a deal with Washington. However, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking in Kyiv last week, told reporters he did not believe Putin was interested in serious negotiations.

Despite what he may say, Secretary of State Blinken is also not interested in serious negotiations. As the actions of other NATO states and the utterances of senior officers from the military alliance attest, NATO is preparing for war with Russia.
That’s why Secretary of State Blinken wants the ban on Ukraine using U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia removed. Like French President Macron and German support for Ukraine, NATO countries are all moving toward more direct involvement in Ukraine
However, readers can safely ignore the Mail’s comment about Putin’s mobilisation plans “triggering hundreds of thousands of draft age men to leave the country.”
This claim is supported by Wikipedia but given that CIA and FBI computers are sometimes used in Wikipedia edits, it’s a safe bet that in this case the online encyclopaedia is being used to disseminate disinformation.
As for Putin’s popularity falling by “several points” over the mobilisation plans? The Russian president’s popularity surged at the start of the conflict in Ukraine with his approval rating among Russians climbing from 71% in February 2022 to 85% in April 2024.
No Western leader comes anywhere close to enjoying this level of support. Putin has the backing of the broad mass of the Russian people, particularly on the issue of Ukraine. So if, as seems likely, the West decides to provide more overt support for its Ukrainian proxy you can be sure that support for Putin will grow even stronger. Ed.

Russia also has to be made black again. So, discussion closed. It is live or die for the white population. The best peace option is to clean up Ukraine and put it in a probation period. And Ukraine is not the only country that needs a good clean up.

I guess the Russians see it as all about timing as they well know the US wants to push the west into a war against them. So maybe if they can end the war before the White House makes its push against Russia, then they’ll have to find another reason to attack Russia which will expose the US as the dominant threat to those too dumb or unwilling to see it before.
It changes the dynamics and therefore the support for war. A few former Soviet states might still be keen but those of western Europe are less likely to be so. And Biden has the November election to consider. He would be foolish to push for war and lose so many votes if Russia calls an end to hostilities.

In placing on the table Russia’s interest in obtaining a ceasefire. Putin is attempting to avoid a nuclear war, but the Western governments are mostly puppet governments led by powers functioning off-stage, behind the curtain. The puppets can do nothing without their puppeteers.
Thus, in order to attain a ceasefire, Putin must appeal to the Western puppeteers, not their puppets, in other words, not Biden of the United States, not Macron of France, not Scholz of Germany, not Sunak of England.
A ceasefire would ruin, or significantly slow down, the massive profits now being enjoyed by these puppeteers who own and control all companies in the West that manufacture war weapons. I argue, to that end, that a ceasefire agreement would have to include a Russian offer of compensation for the loss of profits induced by reconciliation and peace. The Russians would also have to agree to return all Ukrainian territory captured by the Russian military over the past two years.
Owing to those circumstances, it appears we are all headed for a nuclear war, whether limited or full scale. Some of the brightest minds among us tend to believe God would not allow a full-scale nuclear war. However, there is no capacity in war that could destroy our souls, which, by the way, constitute the power of God. Nonetheless, obviously, our bodies, vehicles employed by the soul for purposes of manifestation on Earth, woud be subject to absolute annihilation caused by mere exposure to radioactive material.
As such, for spiritual reasons, bodies are useful, but they can do nothing without the soul, which cannot be slain, removed, or destroyed, so absolute eternal life dwells within each of the 8 billion people currently inhabiting Mother Earth. One of the great powers of the soul is that it can manufacture as many bodies as necessary. A nuclear war, like the European Black Plague that killed off more than half its population during the Medieval period, would simply create the necessity to manufacture more bodies.
