I can understand where you are coming from. But I think many of us, and I include myself, have wrongly attributed people who are just stupid/muddled/uninformed/narcissistic as conscious acting wrong ‘uns when they are not.
The reason is, these people because of their prominence, are accorded intelligence that is just not there. Public personalities are usually good at simply being “public personalities” – at projecting themselves.
In so far as these various actors cause mislead, I have come to believe it is because they often truly believe what they are saying. Someone like Bridgen will spend far less time than most of us on studying subjects like “global warming”, but he will spend considerable time on politicking. MPs are just self-serving actors, apart from those groomed for cabinet positions who will also have darker psychopathic qualities to offer. The same goes for local government from my own experience as well.
But correctly attributing the motives of people we severely disagree with is one of the most tricky things in the “truth-seeking” business IMO. I’ve got it wrong a few times myself.
