The Ukraine conflict has helped Russia overcome the misconception that it can trust the West, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday on Moscow’s diplomacy in 2023, Lavrov argued that Russia’s military operation against Kiev has had positive consequences domestically, including a reinvigorating effect on society which has helped to bring people together.
He added that the conflict, which also ushered in unprecedented Western sanctions, allowed the country’s economy to make great strides in both civilian and military production.
The West’s “hybrid aggression,” which encompassed many areas, played a role in “making us understand how to go on living,” Lavrov said. “If there had been any illusions left over from the 1990s, that the West would open its arms to embrace us and that democracy would unite us all, they have been completely dispelled.”
“The West cannot be trusted. Even now, it wants only one thing – to live at the expense of others and to be more clever than others.”
Lavrov’s comments come after Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted last month that he was “naive” early on in his political career, despite having served in the Soviet KGB. He said he believed that there was no fundamental reason for the West and Moscow to be at odds after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
However, in reality, the former was seeking to break Russia into several entities with less ability to protect their national interests, the president stated. Putin had previously warned that a breakup of the country could lead to the Russian people ceasing to exist altogether, adding that unity is the key condition for the country’s success.
UK HOMES TO BE HIT WITH £102 ANNUAL GARDEN TAX
Residents of the Isle of Wight are now being billed more than £100 a year for garden waste bins under the highest charges in the country.
The island’s local authority has increased its annual subscription for the fortnightly service by 6.25pc, taking the fee from £96 to a “shockingly expensive” £102.It is thought to be the highest fee in the country charged by a council to collect plant trimmings.
Despite the hefty fee, coalition-run Isle of Wight Council (IOWC) said the service was “excellent value for money”.
Elsewhere, councils typically charge between £40 and £60 for the service, but others do it for free.
Joanna Marchong, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “This council has increased the cost of garden waste collection to the highest in Britain, burdening taxpayers during a financially stressful time.
“Councils should be delivering these services as cheaply as possible rather than increasing backdoor taxes.”
The increase was brought into force at the turn of the year without being discussed at cabinet. It was instead made via delegated powers and will be ratified at a budget meeting next month, in a trial before bringing the scheme countrywide
A council spokesman said: “While we try to keep costs as low as possible, there are a range of rising costs that must be absorbed such as staff pay, fuel, vehicle maintenance, gate fees etc.”
Government spokesman Grant Shapps said money has to be found somewhere, we have thousands of asylum seekers arriving every month and these people must be cared for and the money must come from somewhere.

Let’s say your typical US sheeple gets a 20% tax cut. Where does most of it go? Either tax rises, or Wall Street via the property markets, and then it goes to the MIC. Same in the UK. Sunak pledges tax cuts, most ends up in the City and goes to the MIC, be it here or in the US.
They say more money in sheeple pockets means more demand, so higher prices, but this isn’t true in most cases. If sheeple have 10% more to spend, corporates will jack prices, purely based on the fact they know there’s more cash out there. Take Thames Water. This is a virtually risk free business model. They know their incomes, they know their costs, and projections, so how does Thames Water end up with over £12 billion in debt? Sergei Lavrov is a true statesman and diplomat. No one in the entire world comes even close. Certainly not the clowns and cartoon characters of the US and UK.
