Poppy cultivation and opium production have plunged more than 90 percent in Afghanistan since Taliban authorities banned the crop last April, according to a UN report published on Sunday.
Poppy cultivation has dropped by around 95 percent – from 233,000 hectares at the end of 2022 to 10,800 in 2023 – since the Taliban officially banned poppy farming in April 2022, according to the report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Opium production has taken the same path, falling from 6,200 tonnes to 333 tonnes over the same period giving a major blow to Afghan farmers who have experienced a staggering $1bn drop in their revenue.
UN officials said that while this trend could help in the fight against the illicit opium trade, it also presented risks to a vulnerable population that has long depended on the poppy trade for their livelihood.
“This presents a real opportunity to build towards long-term results against the illicit opium market and the damage it causes both locally and globally,” said Ghada Waly, executive director of UNODC.
“At the same time, there are important consequences and risks that need to be addressed for an outcome that is ultimately positive and sustainable, especially for the people of Afghanistan.”
The country has been facing humanitarian and financial hardships after the Taliban stormed to power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces. The group has struggled to revive the economy due to international sanctions and its financial and diplomatic isolation.
Humanitarian crisis
Opium poppy, which grows extensively in Afghanistan’s southern fields, contains the main opium ingredient used to manufacture heroin.
Afghanistan was previously the world’s top opium producer – responsible for over 80 percent of global supply – and a major source of heroin in Europe and Asia.
The Taliban once played a major role in this industry as well, generating an estimated $400m from the trade between 2018 and 2019 that helped fund its activities, US officials reported.
However, the group has pledged to eliminate this drug cultivation enterprise after seizing power, instituting a formal ban on the crop in April 2022. This proved devastating to rural farmers who long relied on the crop for their income, and compounded a humanitarian crisis that is among the worst in the world.
More than two years after the Taliban took over, Afghans continue to struggle with drought and the prolonged effects of decades of war and natural disasters. Today, more than 40 percent of Afghanis suffer from acute food insecurity and more than half rely on humanitarian aid.
UNODC executive director Waly said the loss of the opium trade was adding to the country’s humanitarian needs.
“Afghanistan is in dire need of strong investment in sustainable livelihoods to provide Afghans with opportunities away from opium,” she said.
The financial shock to the opiate supply chain could drive other illegal activities, like the smuggling of arms, people, or synthetic drugs, the recent UNODC report said.
A September report from the UNODC said that Afghanistan is the world’s fastest-growing maker of another drug methamphetamine, known colloquially as speed, crystal or meth. Seizures of the synthetic drug have increased amid a drop in poppy cultivation.

The problem for Islam is that until 1929, with the foundation of the Muslim Brotherhood and the consequent rise of political Islamism, the religion of Mohammed was governed theocratically.
All critique was therefore heresy. Somewhat akin to mediaeval Christianity, the devoted accepted the authority of the priesthood unquestioningly. In Christianity, from the Constantine episcopate forward to the reformation, there was a like investment of faith in the utterances of the clergy.
A corpus of serious-minded, critical biblical scholarship did not emerge until the eighteenth century.
Now that Islam has migrated westward, for the first time in its history, it is being subjected to critical scholarly analysis.
Islam will not survive in Europe because it is riven with historical falsehoods, quite laughable scientific errors and cross-textual contradictions.
The Koran, it is said, is the received word of god and befittingly, deemed infallible. Yet, much to the Imams’ chagrin, there are at least, 49 different versions of the Koran extant, bringing thousands of internal antitheses.
Mohammed is not a name but a titular, meaning “praiseworthy.” In the pre-Islamic tradition, among the Aramaic-speaking Christian Syriac church, “mohammed” was an epithet describing Jesus.
Islam, in its earliest conception, was a conscious attempt to aggrandize Christianity as a coalescing force among Arabs. Don’t you find it curious that Mohammed is mentioned by name, only four times in the Koran but the name of Jesus (Isa) is mentioned twenty-five times?
The Koran says that Allah has 99 names. Among those given names, when correctly translated into English are; The Arrogant (Al-Mutakaddir,) The Mischief Maker (Al-Fattan,) The Distresser (Ad-Darr,) The Humiliator (Al-Muzil) and The Deceiver (Al-Makir.) Only the demiurgic potentate, the great archon, Satan, in his various disguises, had ever previously described himself in such a way.
Islam was always imperial and not proselytising. Nations conquered by the Arabs or Ottomans were offered freedom from debt and slavery, only upon conversion to Islam. Woe betide all others. Islam’s idea of evangelism was a knife at the throat of the reluctant.
Islam currently has attraction because in an age where the Christian churches are supine, it appears to offer a steadfast religiosity, to counter the moral laxity of the jewish-infiltrated christian tradition in the West.
Islam has not been subjected to critical scrutiny in the way that it is now, (in Europe and North America,) since the subjugation of the Zoroastrians in Persia.
Ask yourself, who but a Satanist would dutifully traipse widdershins about a big black cube?

The US and its vassals invaded Afghanistan for two reasons.
(1) To disrupt the ‘New Silk Road’ and oil pipeline projects, and (2) to preserve and continue the CIA’s source of black funding (the CIA controls the world trade in opiates).
‘Islamic extremism’ and ‘9-11’ had nothing to do with it, although that was how it was sold to the idiot public.
The Taliban is simply attempting to restore the country to a normal, functioning, sustaining society, growing edible food and raising healthy livestock to feed its people, devoid of the poisonous modern methods of the western world that includes non-native strains requiring expensive modern petrochemicals.
It appears that the Western world may be tampering with their weather to hinder this from happening, hence the draughts.
(It is obvious to the thinking mind that the reason why the US military department cannot clarify where their budget went is all the worldwide false cloud cover spraying operations by military and commercial cargo aeroplanes to support the Khazarian Mafia controlled CIA.)
The constant vilification of Arabs in general is just another KM covert psyop to gain their mineral wealth under the guise of a Greater Israel, which is why Gaza is being bombed back to the stone age and soil contaminated with sea water in “Hamas tunnels.”
The massive mineral deposits throughout are worth more than the lives of the Palestinians and other Arabs.
Gosh, if I were the (cia) and Co. what would I rather have up my sleeve? A nation full of warring parties which requires an actual invasion, occupation and hundreds of billions to maintain at least partial control of as well as a need to support an immensely huge logistic requirement or would I rather have relatively “in my backyard” factories with train tracks running right up to the back door? And not only this but also factories and labs producing a product base dwarfing opium alone. A product base which not only produces synthetic opiates (among other drugs) but also allows for a variety of strengths and purposes. As well as computerized programs for efficiency, sales and any extracurricular necessities.
Hence farewell Afghanistan, we knew you not but you literally cost us an arm and a leg.
