I was thinking about Russia’s missile development when I saw a picture of the Chinese balloon being approached by a U2 spy plane. The irony of that is lost on the Yanks, accusing China of using a “spy” balloon while taking pictures of it from a plane built in the 1950s to fly high over and spy on Russia. The Yanks thought the U2 flew too high to be brought down by simpleton backward commies… until a Russian missile struck Gary Powers’ U2 and brought it down in 1st May 1960.
Maybe from that incident Russia saw the value of missiles to combat the aggressive US, who I always say was the threat behind the Cold War. If so then Russian missile superiority is not something new but has its antecedents in earlier US aggression.
And the first F-16 to approach that balloon missed it with the first missile so I chalk the first victory up to the balloon, and the only reason the F-16 won that dogfight was because the balloon was unarmed.
