Introduction – May 2, 2022

Russia’s capture of Mariupol and the freeing of nearly 100 Ukrainian civilians held hostage at the Azovstal steelworks is the latest example of how “news” is now used as a vehicle for propaganda.

Note how the following MSM reports play down the fact that it was Russian forces and their local allies that freed the civilians in Mariupol, not Ukrainian forces. In fact the civilians were held hostage by the Azov Battalion who, defiant to the last, had reportedly been ordered not to surrender by Kiev.

However you wouldn’t know that from the Western mainstream media, which glosses over the fact that the civilians held hostage at the steel plant were held by neo-Nazis who are aligned with Zelensky’s government.

Look at Sky News for example, which leads with: “Zelenskyy has said that more than 100 civilians, mostly women and children, were due to arrive in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia…”

As if Zelensky was offering the hostages sanctuary, when in fact it was his allies in the Azov Battalion who had held them hostage.

While if you relied on CNN (below), you would think that the Russians had been holding the civilians hostage.

It all adds up to the same thing. The Western MSM simply cannot be trusted. Its journalists are not objective observers but employees whose careers are beholden to media owners who have a vested interest in the outcome of events. In other words they have a stake in how things are portrayed by the media they own.

So even if they don’t publish outright lies, their media can omit or underplay key facts that alter the entire meaning of a report. Ed.
