Key Takeaways

  • The Pentagon developed options for an approximately three-day attack on Iranian missile and drone arsenals, energy facilities and military command sites, The New York Times reported.
  • Three US aircraft carriers could be in the region by late October, temporarily bringing the naval presence above 20,000 sailors and Marines.
  • Trump said he would not attack before the midterm elections, while officials remained divided over military action and concerned about interceptor supplies.

Pentagon Develops Three-Day Strike Options

The Pentagon has prepared plans for renewed attacks on Iran, including strikes on missile and drone arsenals, energy facilities and other military sites, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

According to the report, “Trump has once more ordered up strike options.”

“Senior national security officials, led by Vice President JD Vance, discussed plans at a meeting last Friday at Camp David. The plans center on a short, intense campaign lasting about three days, according to people briefed on the proposal,” the report added.

Potential targets reportedly include Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command posts and headquarters, alongside weapons capabilities that American officials say Iran has rebuilt since the early phase of the war.

The preparations continued despite Trump’s statement Thursday that he would not attack Iran before the US midterm elections. In a social media post, he claimed that Washington and Tehran were “having productive discussions.”

The New York Times reported that Trump had rejected five proposals in recent months for major operations against Iran or the Yemeni Armed Forces before ordering the latest options. “Each time, Mr. Trump vetoed the plans,” the report stated.

US commanders nevertheless remain prepared to launch renewed attacks if Trump changes his decision, according to the report.

Three Aircraft Carriers Could Overlap in Region

The Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group departed San Diego last week and could reach the region as early as the end of October, joining the George HW Bush and George Washington carrier strike groups.

The deployment would temporarily place three US aircraft carriers in the Middle East for the first time since 2003, according to the report.

By late October, the US naval presence is projected to exceed 20,000 sailors and Marines.

The overlap would be temporary. The George Washington is expected to return to its base in Japan after the Theodore Roosevelt arrives to replace it.

The buildup comes as American commanders face increasing demands on missile defenses protecting US bases and regional infrastructure.

American officials said Iran’s improved tactics and targeting had forced US forces and their regional partners to use more interceptors against incoming missiles.

Earlier in the war, US forces generally fired two interceptors at an incoming Iranian missile, prioritizing the most dangerous attacks. Officials said the number required had subsequently increased, adding pressure to munitions stockpiles.

US Central Command has transferred additional weapons from Europe and Asia to the region. Commanders said interceptor reserves remained available, while expressing concern about the growing difficulty of defending bases housing American troops.

US Officials Divided Over Renewed War

Trump’s administration remains divided over whether another military operation would change Iran’s position.

Officials favoring renewed attacks argue that economic pressure could make a short, intensive assault more effective, particularly if it reduced Tehran’s ability to control the Strait of Hormuz.

Others in Trump’s inner circle remain skeptical that military force would produce the intended outcome and believe economic pressure should be given more time.

Senior officials also expressed concern that renewed fighting would further reduce supplies of defensive weapons needed to protect American bases and intercept Iranian attacks.

The proposed strikes would target Iranian capabilities while exposing US forces and regional infrastructure to further retaliation, requiring additional expenditure of defensive missiles.

Washington and Tehran continue exchanging messages through mediators. Trump’s latest public position rules out an attack before the November elections, while the Pentagon continues preparing options for renewed military action.
