Picture the scene. The pub fire is roaring. Two pints of Hawkstone lager rest on a sticky oak table and the general consensus is that the country has collectively lost its marbles.

This is not merely pub grumbling. Britain’s liberal settlement is being hollowed out by people who claim to be protecting it. The immediate threat is not a fascist movement massing on the Right. It is progressive authoritarianism already embedded within our institutions and its increasingly brazen accommodation of Islamism.

Fascism destroyed European democracy in the 1930s. History is unlikely to return wearing the same uniform. In Britain today, the assault on individual liberty, universal citizenship and our Judeo-Christian inheritance comes principally from the Left.

When the smear stops working

Germany has just provided a glimpse of where this leads. This week in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD won nearly 44% of the vote while the governing CDU collapsed to 17%. Predictably, the Establishment reached for the word ‘fascist’. But that evades the more important question: why did almost half the electorate abandon the centre?

They did not suddenly develop a longing for jackboots. Many simply noticed that their rulers no longer defended their borders, prosperity or culture. Worse, the metropolitan lanyard class considered them morally defective for having the temerity to notice.

When mainstream politicians refuse to defend a country’s Judeo-Christian inheritance, indulge imported ideologies that resist assimilation and silence objections as extremism, voters eventually find someone less polite who will listen.

The AfD victory does not prove that fascism has returned. It proves that calling every objection to mass immigration and cultural disintegration fascist no longer frightens voters back into line. Progressive authoritarianism does not suppress the nationalist backlash. It manufactures it.

For years, the sensible centrist consensus insisted that any threat to British democracy must come from the Right. The familiar pantomime villain was a tattooed thug marching down Whitehall in a black balaclava. Meanwhile, authoritarianism was quietly establishing itself inside the institutions supposedly defending us from it.

The long march through the institutions

That was the script. But look at the actual state of play. The architect of the technocratic centre, Keir Starmer, has been quietly cleared out by a Westminster coup and replaced at the top of the greasy pole by Andy Burnham.

How did Burnham get back into Westminster? He practically pulled a hamstring filming apologies for Labour’s foreign policy to appease sectarian voters. In his own backyard, Gorton and Denton, the Greens shed their sandals and allotments and captured the seat by courting radical Islamist sentiment, emerging as a hard-left machine. The clincher? Burnham’s first big foreign policy gesture was a trade embargo against Israel.

This was not a sudden regime change with tanks rolling past Big Ben. It was something far more insidious. A slow, decades-long march by Left-wing activists through our cultural and political institutions.

Here lies the central thesis of the modern crisis. The grand illusion that keeps the British Establishment blind to its own undoing. The ultimate red herring is the Left’s constant, obsessive smearing of the Right as ‘fascist’ or ‘pre-fascist’: a brilliant, subversive smokescreen designed to conceal its own descent into progressive state authoritarianism.

In Europe today the fascist bogeyman is increasingly a bogeywoman. Giorgia Meloni was presented as Mussolini in heels. Four years later, Italy remains stubbornly democratic and hers has become the longest-lasting Government in the history of the Italian Republic. Yet the same theatrical labels are now attached to Finland’s Riikka Purra and Britain’s Kemi Badenoch whenever they defend borders, national inheritance or the right to say that a country should remain recognisably itself. The costume changes. The pantomime does not.

By forcing mainstream conservatives, civic nationalists and traditionalists into a perpetual defensive crouch and demanding that they constantly prove they are not monsters, the Left diverts public attention from a very real and very pernicious assault on liberal democracy and Judeo-Christian values.

Reform is not a fascist movement and opposing mass immigration does not make its voters blackshirts. Their offence is to challenge a progressive consensus that increasingly prefers moral denunciation to democratic argument.

Lest anyone dismiss this as partisan panic conjured by the Right, consider the voices sounding the alarm from the historical Left. Witness Clare Fox. Raised in the fierce trenches of radical Left-wing politics and the Revolutionary Communist Party, Baroness Fox now sits as an independent peer in the House of Lords and has become one of the country’s most vocal defenders of individual rights, free speech and classical civil liberties.

Why? Because authentic old-school Leftists who value the intellectual inheritance of the Enlightenment recognise what this new breed of progressive is doing. They see a Left-wing apparatus that has abandoned universalism in favour of tribal authoritarianism.

When lifelong radicals warn that the modern Left is driving a coach and horses through free speech, you know it is not merely a right-wing conspiracy.

The unholy alliance

If we want to trace the rot to its source, we must examine the death of the Western Enlightenment and the rise of postmodernism. Decades ago, universities began popularising the catastrophic notion that objective truth does not exist, that feelings trump facts and that Western civilisation is uniquely evil. When universal reason is subordinated to identity politics, an enormous intellectual vacuum appears.

Into that vacuum steps Islamism. Not Islam as a private faith. Islam as a political ideology demanding that religious authority prevail over secular law.

Its ambitions are expressed with brutal clarity in documents such as the original Hamas charter. It did not demand the eradication of Christianity and Judaism. It offered their practitioners a Hobson’s choice. Accept Islamic sovereignty or face “carnage, displacement and terror”. Those are Hamas’s words, not mine.

Islamism does not merely ask for freedom to worship. It seeks political and cultural submission to a supreme religious authority. That places it in direct conflict with freedom of conscience, secular government and the sovereignty of the individual.

The modern British Left has turned Palestine into a moral obsession. Legitimate criticism of Israeli policy, particularly its conduct in the West Bank, too often slides into apologism for Hamas, hostility towards Israel’s existence and silence about Islamist ambitions.

In doing so, progressive activists become useful idiots for a movement whose ultimate enemy is not merely Israel but the foundational framework of Western secular liberty.

Totalitarianism changes its uniform

This is where the lesson of Weimar becomes relevant. The comparison is not between Reform and the Nazis. Nor is it a claim that Britain is replaying 1930s Germany in fancy dress. The lesson is that liberal democracy collapses when its institutions abandon universal principles, enforce the law selectively and accommodate movements that despise democracy itself.

Weimar’s enemies were ruthless, but its governing institutions also fractured under the weight of tribalism. The judiciary, police and mainstream political parties steadily lost the authority and confidence required to defend the democratic order.

The state lost its monopoly on public order. Street-level intimidation became normal and parliamentarians altered their behaviour through fear.

In the 1930s, this institutional surrender opened the way for biological racism and fascist totalitarianism. Once universal citizenship was replaced by racial grievance, the republic was doomed.

The ideology threatening Britain today is different. Progressive identity politics divides citizens according to race, sex and inherited grievance. Islamism divides them according to belief and submission. One captures the institutions while the other exploits their guilt, cowardice and appetite for sectarian votes.

The modern British Establishment is making the same category error. It is replacing universal British values with a hierarchy of grievances.

We are seeing an identity-based tribal takeover in which race and religious identity are weaponised to silence critics, capture local councils and demand blasphemy-style censorship through sweeping new definitions of ‘anti-Muslim hostility’.

To understand why the secular Left is so willing to lie down with the Islamist Right, we must understand the nature of these ideologies.

Fascism, Marxism and Islamism have different histories, doctrines and declared objectives. But each contains the same totalitarian temptation. The individual becomes subordinate to the group, dissent becomes treachery and the state or religious authority becomes the final arbiter of permissible thought.

Fascism delivered the final blow to Weimar. That does not mean every future assault on liberal democracy must come from the same political direction or arrive dressed in the same uniform.

Islamism exhibits the same totalising impulse. The subjugation of the individual. The eradication of dissent. The use of intimidation to place religious doctrine beyond democratic scrutiny.

The progressive Left accommodates Islamism because, like its adherents, Islamists are hostile to the inherited liberal order. Progressives regard it as a system of oppression. Islamists regard secular law as subordinate to divine law. Neither is comfortable with the individual who refuses to submit to its orthodoxy.

Look at the Left’s political pantomime over the past few years to see how the red herring works in practice. When free-speech advocates point out that proposed definitions of ‘Islamophobia’ could create a backdoor blasphemy law shielding an illiberal ideology from democratic scrutiny, they are instantly booed as ‘far-Right extremists’.

When commentators point to police indulgence of keffiyeh-clad marches featuring antisemitic chants while peaceful Right-wing protesters are treated like insurrectionists, the pantomime villain is summoned again.

Violence, intimidation and masked hooliganism should be prosecuted whoever commits them. But the presence of a few men in black balaclavas does not transform millions of people concerned about immigration into Mussolini’s tribute act.

Anyone questioning the double standard is accused of inciting a race war.

The strategy is ruthlessly efficient. Use the accusation of fascism to bully the opposition into silence. The purpose is to conceal an increasingly authoritarian system that enforces the law according to group identity rather than individual conduct.

Today, Labour and the Greens are making a dangerous Faustian bargain. They believe they can court radical, illiberal factions for a handful of inner-city constituencies without surrendering the liberal principles they claim to defend.

It is an astonishing act of self-deception. Secular progressives are indulging a deeply illiberal and socially conservative theology because both regard the inherited British liberal order as obsolete and beyond the pale.

Meanwhile, the Right is fragmenting. Reform has moved towards the centre, leaving Restore to occupy the harder nationalist ground. That is a conventional realignment within democratic politics, not evidence that fascism is marching towards Westminster.

Fascism? It’s behind you!

The progressive Left occupies much of the machinery of government. When institutions restrict speech, enforce the law according to group identity and bend public policy to sectarian pressure, authoritarianism is no longer waiting outside the gates. It is sitting inside, wearing a lanyard and drafting the guidance.

Britain has spent years searching the horizon for imaginary blackshirts while progressive Marxism and political Islam have steadily weakened the liberal order from within. Fascism destroyed Weimar in the 1930s. The totalitarian impulse has not disappeared. It has changed its language, its costume and its preferred entrance.

It is time to put down the pints and look in the right direction. The immediate threat to Britain’s liberal democracy and Judeo-Christian inheritance is not marching down Whitehall from the Right. It is already walking through our institutions from the Left.
