Phil Stewart and David Lawder – Reuters Aug 31, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video clip that he said was Iran’s oil hub Kharg Island being blown to smithereens, hours after the two countries traded attacks for the first time since July.

It was not clear if Trump’s post was a threat to Kharg Island or if an attack was taking place.

Several hours after the post, there was no evidence Kharg had been attacked.

The White House and the U.S. Defense Department did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment outside regular business hours. There was no immediate response to Trump’s post on Iranian media.

“Kharg Island ‌being blown to smithereens!!! President DJT,” Trump said on his Truth ‌Social platform on Sunday, but gave no further details.

Reuters confirmed that an accompanying video clip showing dramatic explosions was most likely synthetically-generated, using software that detects AI-manipulated imagery.

Attacking Kharg, which handled 90% of Iran’s oil exports before the war launched by U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28, would severely disrupt its energy trade and put huge pressure on its economy.

Iran was not seeking war but would respond decisively to any aggression, President Masoud Pezeshkian said.

“We will never remain silent in the face of any aggression and will respond decisively to the aggressors,” state media quoted him as saying on Monday ahead of a visit to Kyrgyzstan.

In retaliation Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched ballistic missile attacks on two US bases in Jordan and another in the UAE. In addition, the IRGC claim to have shot down a long-range US Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran says it targeted American base in UAE, shot down US drone

TRT World – Aug 31, 2026

Tehran says dozens of explosive drones targeted US personnel and helicopters at Al Minhad Air Base in retaliation for a US strike on Iran’s Larak Island.

Iran’s military said on Monday it had launched dozens of explosive drones at US troops and helicopters stationed at Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, in retaliation for a US strike on Iran’s Larak Island.

The Iranian army said the attack targeted locations housing US military personnel and helicopters at the base, which it described as an important logistics and air transport hub for foreign forces, according to Iranian news agencies.

The army vowed further retaliation against US troops, saying the operation was in response to the killing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard members and civilians in Sunday’s US strike.

The Guards separately said on Monday that it had shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz with missile fire, causing it to crash into Gulf waters, according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency.

The developments followed US strikes on two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, marking the first US strikes on Iranian territory since late July, a US official told Axios.

The operation targeted systems that were allegedly being prepared to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.

The Guards said several of its fighters and civilians were killed or injured in the attack and vowed to respond. Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that preliminary information indicated the US attack was carried out by drones.
