A study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia has found an association between frequent television watching and reduced brain volume in regions vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease over a 22-year period. Researchers tracked more than 1,700 middle-aged adults and found that those who reported watching TV very often in the late 1980s had smaller volumes in key brain areas and more damage to the brain’s internal wiring when scanned decades later, according to the report.
The associations persisted after researchers accounted for physical activity levels, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, drinking, and body weight. The study is observational and cannot prove that watching television causes brain shrinkage, only that the two are connected, the authors noted.
Methodology and Participant Data
The analysis drew on data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, a long-running research project that has followed tens of thousands of adults across four U.S. communities since the late 1980s. For this analysis, 1,712 participants who attended both an early visit in 1987 to 1989 and a later visit in 2011 to 2013 were included, according to the study. None had dementia at the time of brain scanning. About 57% were women, and participants had an average age of 53 at the start and 76 at the imaging visit.
Early in the study, participants were asked how often they watched television during leisure time and how often they sat during work, with options ranging from “never” to “very often.” Researchers measured volumes in brain regions known to shrink early in Alzheimer’s disease, as well as in the brain’s outer layers and deeper structures. They also measured white matter hyperintensities, bright spots on brain scans that signal damage to the brain’s internal communication pathways. Higher volumes of these spots generally indicate a higher risk of cognitive decline, the study stated.
Contrast Between TV Watching and Occupational Sitting
People who reported watching TV very often had smaller volumes in several brain regions, including areas linked to Alzheimer’s disease, compared to those who rarely or never watched TV, according to the researchers. They also had higher volumes of white matter hyperintensities, the bright spots tied to small-vessel damage in the brain. These associations held even after accounting for participants’ physical activity levels and other health factors, according to the study.
Occupational sitting showed a different pattern. Participants who reported always sitting at work had less internal brain pathway damage and larger volumes in several brain regions, including the frontal region involved in planning, decision-making, and problem-solving. One possible reason for the difference, the researchers suggested, is that sitting at work often involves sustained mental effort and goal-directed thinking, which may help maintain brain structure over time. This aligns with findings that passive activities like watching TV may accelerate cognitive decline, while mentally engaging tasks may be protective, according to an article by Kevin Hughes published on NaturalNews.com [1].
Sex Differences in the Association
Sex played a notable role in the findings, the study reported. Among men, frequent TV watching was broadly linked to smaller volumes across multiple brain regions, including areas involved in emotion, language, visual processing, and memory. Men who sat more at work also showed larger volumes in specific frontal brain regions. In women, these associations were largely absent or much weaker.
Researchers said they could not pinpoint the exact reasons for this difference from this study alone, according to the report. One possibility raised in the paper is that women may watch TV in shorter, more interrupted stretches than men. Another is that men and women may differ in the types of activities they pursue during leisure time. Hormonal differences may also play a role, though the study was not designed to test that directly, the authors wrote. Previous research has similarly found that TV watching can affect children differently, with some studies suggesting television in kids’ rooms is linked to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity [2].
Independence from Physical Activity and Other Factors
One of the more revealing aspects of the study is that factoring in physical activity did not meaningfully change the results, according to the researchers. The brain differences tied to TV watching and occupational sitting appear to be at least partially independent of how much a person exercises. This suggests that the nature of sedentary behavior may matter as much as total sitting time, according to the report.
Researchers also ran multiple rounds of additional testing to check whether the findings held up after excluding participants with early memory problems or pre-existing vascular brain conditions, and after accounting for a gene variant tied to Alzheimer’s risk. For most of the key findings, the results remained consistent, the study said. For dementia prevention research, which has long focused on what people do when they’re active, this study redirects attention to what happens during the hours people spend seated, a substantial portion of the day for older adults. As the book “The Alzheimer’s Solution” by Dean Sherzai notes, it is never too late to start healthy habits that benefit brain health [4]. Additional research has indicated that mentally stimulating activities can cut cognitive decline [3].
Conclusion
The study adds to a growing body of literature suggesting that not all sedentary time carries the same risk for cognitive health. The findings indicate that passive activities such as watching television may be more detrimental to brain structure than mentally engaging forms of sitting, such as those often found in office work. While the research is observational and cannot establish causation, the results remained robust across multiple sensitivity analyses.
For individuals seeking to preserve cognitive function, the study’s authors suggested that replacing passive screen time with mentally engaging activities could be a prudent strategy. Future research is needed to determine whether reducing TV watching or increasing cognitively stimulating sedentary behavior can directly improve brain health outcomes.

> Ah yes, more of the “millions of years” nonsense. Sumeria rose from earlier destruction WITHIN the past 25,920 year Platonic Year. Sumerians, just as ancient Indians…
2 + 5 + 9 + 2 + 0 = 18.
Platonic = Plato = lived from 428-347 BC.
4 + 2 + 8 = 14.
3 + 4 + 7 = 14.
Just a coincidence…

> The Sumerians did not get their knowledge from the giant inhabitants of Nibiru, the Annunaki. They were quarantained and left Earth a very very long time ago…
Annunaki = Vaughan Icke.
I suggest that the above two have Reduced Brain Volume…
I spoke to someone who said evolution was made up. Then they said noah made a huge boat and put two of every creature in it. So I went to look in their book to see what it actually said. The boat was 134 meters long. And had two of every creature on earth in it. With the food for 40 days, half that length is gone for storage. And this person believes that. They also believe the “nazis” gassed 6m kikes. Talking to humans is like talking to “Sumerians”.
So let’s get this right. An organisation that’s making sheckels from yapping about dementia in old people is telling you old people have dementia?
> The associations persisted after researchers accounted for physical activity levels, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, drinking, and body weight.
Whew! Luckily they “accounted” for all that. Because someone pumping themselves with shit might otherwise have snuck into the “study”.
> The study is observational and cannot prove that watching television causes brain shrinkage, only that the two are connected, the authors noted.
It can’t even do that. But at least the “authors” tossed in something not a million miles from the truth.
Here’s a question for whichever baiters “wrote” it with “AI”: What if all the “subjects” watched “educational TV” the entire time?
According to mathis, the first three of those “references” are CIA operations. The other is presumably the baiter referencing themself.
I’d do an “Explainer Infographic”, but I’m not a BSer.
LOL..
they say…
‘The study is observational and cannot prove that watching television causes brain shrinkage, only that the two are connected, the authors noted.’
which is obvious gibberish, the study is observational, so of course you could if you fancied, connect any disparate old shit you observe together…
.. I could for example INFER* that the television is actually talking to me personally or I’m in direct communion with jesus H christ, who wants me to shop at waitrose as an act of fucking devotion..it doesn’t make it an evident reality or in any way connected to the catholic church or the garden of gethsemane.. even if I say it does..it’s a fucking inference you imbecile…
now I’m all in favour of sitting imbeciles in front of a machine that atrophies their brains and keeps them sedantry and immobile..
unfortunately the regime has already done that decades ago…so I can categorically state without resorting to weasel whirreds or in media res type subterfuge, that the idiot box turns you into a moron… it’s not an observational connection, it’s an evident fact..
that’s what it was designed to do…
*inference is what passes for the scientific method nowadays, yes that’s right the scientific METHOD..there is no such fucking thing as ‘science’… it’s a catch all term for inference, which is why most of the blathers are actually unprovable ‘theories’..yes that’s right
THEORIES.. and the rest bunkum…
dear dear..
Surely if you watch teevee then you are already a moron?
If that was the late 1980’s when tv was at least watchable what would studies find since 2020 with the crap that is now served up as ”entertainment? Fornication Island, I’m a Nobody get me out of here and strictly all about the vain and talentless presenters?? I can only imagine Alzheimer’s quota’s will go through the roof over next 5 years it certainly wont take 30 or 40 years for that crap to take effect
Tv content is a factor as well: there is a difference between a good script, acting, mode of presentation (ai, cg, vs stunt men, man created scenery or animation etc) and a good plot or valid subject matter vs the rot of pre-k through 12 ‘pop culture’. Sports offers appreciation of athleticism but has given into lesser white participation with perpetual commercial reinforcement.
Get your booster shots!
With A.I. this will be far worse than with T.V.
Brains will shrink to wanut size because people now don’t need to investigate anything by themselves, just ask AI and presto! … without effort and with the added benefit of more free time to watch Playboy Magazine.
Additionally, the effect of not having to exercise any true creativity, not even for writing letters, will be devastating, at least, that’s my humble opinion.
I would arrest anybody who said that we are seeing human evolution in action, ready to “trascend” somewhere to some dumb utopia.
