Boyd D. Cathey – The Unz Review July 16, 2026

There is a memorable passage from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, 1984, published more than seven decades ago. In remarkable fashion Orwell, long before the current contagion of organized hysterical street riots over illegal immigration (and before those of Black Lives Matter), pinpointed a central characteristic, a critical fact that just now other observers have begun to notice. In commenting on the arguably lunatic actuation of large numbers of women who militated among the vanguard of radical revolutionaries, he writes:

“It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy.”

Those familiar with Nikita Mikhalkov’s stunning 2014 film, Sunstroke, will recall that it is the intense bespectacled female commissar (based on the real-life personage, the fanatical Jewess Rosalia Samoilovna Zemlaychka) at the end of the Russian Civil War who heartlessly and in chilling sang-froid orders the drowning of hundreds of surrendered White soldiers who had been promised amnesty…an actual, horrifying event. And not to forget the madness of Spartacist Rosa Luxemburg in post-World War I Germany or the incendiary rhetoric of “La Pasionaria” [Dolores Ibarruri] in 1936 Spain (she died quietly in Madrid in 1989, honored by thousands). Women were always at the frenetic forefront of Revolution.
.

Just recently a dear friend, an accomplished and highly regarded author, wondered out loud to me: “Just maybe those widely condemned witch hunts of centuries ago actually had a basis in fact?” Of course, his statement was uttered largely in jest…but, yet, did it not contain at least a modicum of truth? Could all of those poor witches burned at the stake or otherwise punished have been as innocent as the driven snow?

It brought back recollections of the extended and forceful arguments made by the great Southern divine and post-War Between the States apologist Robert Lewis Dabney over 150 years ago against women’s suffrage [“Women’s Rights Women,” The Southern Magazine, 1871]. Were not Dabney and, indeed, the teachings of historic Christianity correct? Did not Natural Law and, in fact, Divine Positive Law succinctly state the fundamental biological AND theological differences between Male and Female, and thus make an impregnable case for different but honorable roles in society, against an enforced and procrustean equality, which distorts those fundamental differences and results in calamitous social dislocation?

And was this not another major reason that the millennia-old inherited society around us is collapsing, to be replaced by a monstruous, dystopian Gulag, a counter-reality where our tried-and-true verities are unceremoniously dumped onto the ash heap of history?

Recently I caught a portion of a public access broadcast of a local city council meeting. Several dozen protesters were present and proceeded to testify…that is, rant and rave and threaten the council members if they did not, that very moment, pass a resolution condemning ICE and the forcible repatriation of criminal illegals back to their native countries.

Almost all of them were identifiably women (?), and they were some of the ugliest, foulest looking creatures I’ve ever seen—anywhere: Purple stringy hair, 300 lb. female monsters, bulging out in all the wrong places, downright nasty, their noses festooned with ringlets, their mouths spilling out threats and imprecations and demands. If anyone—any rational person, that is—were sympathetic to their position, just their presence might have probably quashed that sentiment and discouraged a sympathetic response.

Yet, the council members—like most mind-in-the-cloud liberals (and conservatives)—appeared staid and polite, intently listening, as the loathsome harpies seized the microphone during the comment session.

That set me to thinking: How did those women become such foul harridans? Certainly, they weren’t that way as toddlers or young girls. And my thoughts centered on two causes which I believe have propelled us to where we are today: First, our perverted educational system, abetted by the disintegration of the nuclear family and its critical role in nurturing and raising children—abdicating much of that natural responsibility to the secular state; and, second, the virtual collapse of traditional Christianity and its essential teachings on the roles of male and female (e.g., the heretical spouting of the German “Catholic” bishops), and the importance of supporting and enhancing the critical importance and God-given dignity of the distinct genders.

Most of those “woke” women went through our educational system, and most likely had parents who forked over thousands of shekels to make certain their daughters got a “good education.” And, no doubt, that is a major part of the problem. For several decades we have permitted—in many cases, enabled—the total miseducation (I should call it as it is—indoctrination and cerebral infection) of our children by a corrupt public education system (which Republicans feed almost as badly as Democrats). That miseducation is coming back to haunt us with a vengeance, culturally, politically, and religiously.

And just as significant, nearly all mainline Christian denominations now inculcate into their flocks a stark deviation of traditional Christianity which has very little resemblance to the belief system that formed and nurtured historic Western civilization, a belief system that produced the great saints and philosophers of our history, noble artists, authors, and architects of our accumulated culture.

Well over a century ago the great essayist Henry Adams authored perhaps his finest book, Mont St. Michel and Chartres (1904), in which he takes the reader on a mentally evocative tour of the high Middle Ages…from the glories of the Abbey Mont St. Michel, to the artistic perfection of Chartres cathedral, to the brilliance of authors and saints like St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Francis of Assisi. And the comparisons between those unmistakable high points of our past, and the modern age which Adams sees symbolized by the mechanical dynamo, are stark.

Indeed, it was Adams’ understanding of the essential role of the Blessed Virgin and her Divine Maternity not only in Christian belief but as the model for womanhood that characterized the critical and elevated role of women in Christian civilization. In fulsome language Adams describes Our Lady’s sublime position: “True it was, although one should not say it jestingly, that the Virgin embarrassed the Trinity; and perhaps this was the reason, behind all the other excellent reasons, why men loved and adored her with a passion such as no other deity has ever known….”

That appreciation of Motherhood, that genuine respect, that inherent dignity and signal importance accorded to women has all but collapsed in modern society.

Whereas earlier generations grew up in traditional nuclear families which honored women, placing them on a pedestal, and where divorce was a rarity, where abortion was practically unknown, and where public education was considered an extension of parental guidance (not some secret lab for “woke” teachers to push six year boys to have sex mutilation operations, without the knowledge of their parents), that sense of family and community have largely disappeared.

And so, we have the image of those foul witches with purple hair….They are an appropriate symbol, a primary illustration, of what the best laid plans of our grasping leaders have produced…secular and barren modernism run rampant, the destruction of Natural and Divine Positive Law, and if familial traditions or heritage or belief should stand in the way, then let them be damned.

Our national decline can be traced to a number of factors, including the perversion of our educational and entertainment systems, the infiltration and destruction of traditional Christianity, the deleterious results of the “civil rights” bills of the 1960s, and including the long-range effects of the 19th Amendment.

Humanly speaking it may be almost impossible at this point to reverse our decline. Yet, with God’s help we must try. For we also know that with His aid nothing is impossible
