However, we now see from all of the brainwashing through the media and our educational systems in the 20th century that they only moral standard remaining for the common people is that of moral relativism – which is no standard at all for any people or nation to enable any form or integrity of the individual person to survive. This means that our only real moral standard in the present comes down to the norms and laws propagated by the state, which with the continued decline of any genuine form of democracy, essentially means the rule of the rich and the powerful, essentially for the rich and the powerful
Chesterton was a supporter of the “Distributism” movement in which he believed with respect to property that it should not be concentrated and consolidated in the hands of the rich and powerful, or the state, but should be distributed as wide as possible to the common people. The idea of Freehold property was very much a Christian development over the centuries, as was the idea of distributing vast Crown and Feudal lands to surfs for them to eke out a living. Today, with the increasing centralized controls of the rich and powerful we are increasingly being kicked off of the land, and losing our ownership rights. Also, as a well-known journalist in the UK, Chesterton could also see that although the press was created to give the common people the truth, what it had become based on the ownership class which controlled it was an instrument to suppress the truth.
Had he lived longer than the 1930’s Chesterton likely would have expanded the doctrine of “Distributism” to include the widest possible dissemination of the facts on all issues relative to our interests, as a DUTY by our governments, the media, and all in positions of authority over us. He may have even gone as far as wanting to make it a CAPITAL OFFENCE based on a most fundamental breach of trust for such authorities to lie to us, and as something JUSTIFYING a REVOLUTION by the common people for their crimes against humanity. However, what standard is there now left, what ideal remains, even to call lying to your neighbor for personal gain an evil or a moral wrong? What standard remains except that of Christ and the will of God to say that it is a far more hideous evil for our governments to deceive us with false flags, mass deceptions, brainwashing, mind control, fake science, fake history, and fake news?
If we want to work towards a world in which we are not ruled by stealth through mass deceptions, fearmongering, political charlatanry, and totalitarian oppression, but a world ruled by trust based on truth, freedom and justice, then there is really only one standard which can check the evil powers we are now living under, and that is the standard of Christ and his Cross. Chesterton showed that there is none other.
