President Donald Trump has not ruled out a ground offensive in Iran amid the latest escalations between Tehran and the U.S., putting the threat of all-out war in the Middle East firmly in sight.
Trump threatened Iran with severe airstrikes, including targeting bridges and power plants, if it didn’t return to the negotiating table. He added that “other people” would also be responsible for launching any necessary ground campaign in the country.
“Sometimes you need a ground campaign, but we have other people that will do the ground campaign for us,” Trump said during an interview with Fox News this week, but did not offer any suggestions on who those people might be.
It comes after the U.S. military launched a series of strikes against Iran, while reinstating a blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command posted on X, “The strikes are designed to further degrade military capabilities Iranian forces have used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Iran responded to the latest U.S. attacks with strikes mainly targeting U.S. bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. Meanwhile, Trump reversed his plan to put a 20 percent fee on maritime traffic in the crucial waterway.
When the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Iran on Feb. 28, Tehran effectively closed the waterway to shipping traffic – a move that sent the price of oil, fertilizer, and many other goods soaring far beyond the region and gave Iran major leverage in negotiations.
Those rising prices pose a particular challenge to U.S. President Donald Trump and his Republican Party, which hopes to retain control of Congress in the November elections, but Washington has struggled to reopen the waterway.
Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard threatened on Wednesday to halt all energy exports from the Middle East over the blockade.
“The export of oil and gas from the region will be either for everyone or for no one,” it said.
Overnight, the U.S. military unleashed a barrage of strikes against dozens of targets, according to Central Command, before resuming its assault on Iran in broad daylight Wednesday – an extraordinary escalation that underscored the rapidly intensifying pace of the campaign.
Among the targets was Greater Tunb Island, considered a strategically vital position within the Strait of Hormuz. Central Command confirmed the strike focused on Iranian defense installations and missile sites.
Iran seized control of three islands – Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb – from what would become the United Arab Emirates in 1971, and the UAE has long sought to reclaim them.
Several analysts have proposed that U.S. control of the islands could enable Washington to dominate the critical strait.
It is likely that the islands may be subject to invasion, probably involving troops from the Gulf States, assisted and accompanied by US specialists. In the short run it would be achievable, but almost impossible to sustain.

The charity Save the Children has angered the government with a social media post marking the hated Keir Starmer’s impending exit from Downing Street.

On Tuesday, it posted a mocked up picture of a commemorative blue plaque, which read: “History will not forget complicity. Keir Starmer witnessed 73,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces, including 21,000 children, and kept supplying arms to Israel.”
Starmer a jew, had the government place very few restrictions on arms sales to Israel in 2024, but stopped short of a complete suspension.
Save the Children’s X post had been viewed more than 300,000 times by Wednesday afternoon. Gaza’s health ministry said this week that more than 73,000 Palestinians have died since the beginning of the conflict on 7 October 2023, after Hamas was enticed into Israel.

The death toll included 1,000 people who had been killed since the start of a ceasefire in October last year, according to the ministry.
