Retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, a former U.S. Army Europe commander, is warning that President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — by forcing seasoned military figures out of leadership roles — are promoting instability in the U.S. Armed Forces. But Hertling isn’t the only veteran who is sounding the alarm. Retired U.S. Army Adm. William H. McRaven, writing in The Atlantic, emphasizes that the United States needs detailed “answers” about all the firings and resignations taking place at the Pentagon during Trump’s second presidency.
“Every president and secretary of defense has the right and, moreover, the responsibility to remove officers who are failing to meet the high standards expected of senior leaders,” McRaven argues in his Atlantic article. “But when crucial decisions regarding the professionalism, effectiveness, or morale of the military are made, the people and their duly elected representatives have a right to know why these decisions were made. In recent months, President Trump, upon advice from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, has relieved or forced the retirement of some of the finest officers that have ever served this nation. I have personally worked with most of them in combat.”
McRaven continues, “I can tell you from experience that Generals C. Q. Brown, Randy George, Jim Mingus, J. P. McGee, Dave Hodne, Jim Slife, and Joe Berger and Admirals Lisa Franchetti and Jamie Sands were war fighters through and through. And this week, in an egregious decision, the president forced Gen. Chris Donahue to step down from his position in command of U.S. Army Europe.”
Hertling, on the conservative website The Bulwark, found the forced resignation of Donahue especially troubling — as Donahue, Hertling argued, brings a wealth of military expertise to the table.
McRaven, similarly, writes, “Donahue is without question one of the most brilliant officers I know. He is strategically focused, tactically aggressive, personally courageous, exceptionally thoughtful in his planning and execution, and compassionate with his troops…. What is particularly concerning about these firings is the dismissals will have on officer ranks.”
The Trump/Hegseth firings at the Pentagon, according to McRaven, “raise a real risk that senior officers will be overly cautious about providing their best advice and, therefore, that the chance for military miscalculation will grow dramatically.”
“If Secretary Hegseth is trying to ‘revive the warrior ethos and restore trust in our military,’ as he has said, then the unplanned departure of these senior leaders will do just the opposite and may leave the president and the secretary without the experienced voices they need to make the best military decisions,” the retired U.S. Navy admiral says. “Members of Congress should demand answers. The American people should demand answers. The future of our national security depends on it.”

A Heathrow security officer sued for discrimination, claiming that a request to remove her Palestine flag badge was equivalent to being told to take off a hijab.
Zara Saiyed launched legal action against Britain’s largest airport, arguing that colleagues and bosses had discriminated against her because of her race and religion, after a dispute over the flag pinned to her staff lanyard.
During the dispute, Ms Saiyed compared asking her to remove the Palestinian emblem to forcing a Muslim woman to take off her hijab.
An employment tribunal heard that she had also accused Heathrow Airport Ltd of being “complicit in the killing of Palestinian babies” as she pursued a series of grievances.
But after hearing almost two weeks’ worth of evidence, and considering more than 1,600 pages of documents, the tribunal unanimously dismissed her claims

Lobby group UK Finance is developing a platform that will allow banks to share data on their customers where they detect “markers of racist crime”.Lloyds, Barclays and Revolut have already started sharing data about customers, leading to accounts being frozen or closed, The Telegraph understands, following a pilot in 2024.
The data-sharing platform will build on that pilot to make a UK-wide system, which could automatically bar people from opening another account.
But concerns have been raised that thousands of innocent customers and businesses who have been debanked unfairly could be barred from opening up an account with another bank, effectively leaving them locked out of the financial system.t comes after rules prohibiting customers suing banks were brought in during 2023 as part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act.
Nigel Farage, who was debanked by Coutts in 2023, told The Telegraph that plans cast the net far too widely and that innocent people could be excluded from the financial system.Mr Farage said: “Suspicion of any crime can include any unusual payment, this casts the net far too widely. An innocent person could be excluded from normal life under this proposal.”

Democratic Representative Greg Casar of Texas has announced he will support an amendment to cut off American military aid to the Israeli regime.
Casar, a vocal critic of unconditional US support for Israel, stated on Monday that he plans to back the measure proposed by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie.
The amendment would cancel the $3.3 billion in annual military assistance to Israel and eliminate additional funding earmarked for the Zionist entity under the State Department appropriations bill.
In a post on X, Casar said the Israeli regime is committing war crimes in Gaza and helping drag the United States into conflict with Iran.
“Americans should not be financing more weapons for Netanyahu,” he declared.

A migrant who raped young girls after grooming them on social media has been jailed for 15 years. Tarek Miah, formerly of Salvington, Worthing, contacted girls in West Sussex online and then carried out the abuse. The 20-year-old admitted four counts of rape on one victim, aged under 13, between 2023 and 2024. His first victim was an autistic 12-year-old, Portsmouth Crown Court heard. His second victim was nine when he began grooming her.
Judge Michael Bowes KC said that a pre-sentence report found repeated sexual offences of girls were likely to occur, adding that Miah posed “a very high risk against white girls”.
Miah moved to the UK from Bangladesh at the age of three, the court was told. Referring to Miah’s probation report, prosecutor Steven Molloy said that his culture “may affect his attitude” towards girls, BBC reports.
