Yay, I guess.
There goes our sixth “leader” in ten years, and in comes our seventh.
I know some quarters – on both right and left – will be going full Holy Grail…
But I can’t bring myself to care about what is, at absolute best, a PR exercise.
The only real change is that, moving forward, I will likely be italicizing the word “Sir” a lot less.
As always, when there’s a leadership change, people will rush to talk about “legacy”. But Starmer doesn’t have one. He’s just sort of there.
The process that started before he arrived carried one while he was there, and will continue after he’s gone.
He’s not done anything. He never had the power to do anything and never tried to do anything. The Online Safety Act and Social Media Ban will likely be the things he is most remembered for, but – again – they would have happened whether or not he even existed.
That’s MPs and politicians the world over, really – “grocer-mentality boys who like to be photographed getting in and out of Daimlers in Whitehall”, according to News Benders.
They are hood ornaments and hubcaps. Good for brand recognition and covering up the messy bits, but they go where the engine goes, turn in the direction the wheels point, and the car runs just fine without them.
Starmer was always a bizarre choice for a Labour leader – or any leader really – being so entirely devoid of presence or charisma, having a knighthood, and looking like a sausage in an ill-fitting polyester suit.
His replacement will be Andy Burnham. Sure, there’ll be a “leadership” election, and eunuch-faced Wes Streeting will push his case, but he will lose. Burnham is clearly the picked man.
(UPDATE: Between the writing and publishing of this piece, Streeting announced he would not contest the leadership, so Burnham is walking in unopposed.)
Burnham is another soulless void, but he’s got a Northern accent and no knighthood, so people may take a little longer to figure out he’s not actually in it for the ordinary man on the street.
In his victory speech following the by-election last week, Burnham called for a “new kind of politics”.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because it was Corbyn’s line when he won the leadership election in 2015. The difference is Corbyn meant it.
Which is why he’s in the political wilderness now, and every single one of the people he humiliated in leadership contests is either in the cabinet or about to become Prime Minister.
That’s what sincerity gets you.
Spoiler – Burnham’s “new kind of politics” is going to be very like our old politics…but with a Northern accent.

Hasn’t Starmer heard the expression ‘You should always pay your Jews’? I don’t believe he’s too tight to want to pay his rent boys, I hear with some people not to pay a sex worker the agreed price for sex is part of their thrill. Some years ago a man refused to pay a prostitute the agreed price and she took it to law as a breach of contract. A sympathetic judge said his actions equated to rape and he sentenced the man to, I think, four years for sexual assault.
Some claim the Trump admin will disclose more about Starmer’s case but I didn’t follow it up, but it’s said there’s more to come out about this case and Starmer was pushed out before he brought the government down. Maybe so, maybe that’s just mischief, but it might not be over just yet.

Valid points about how Corbyn was trashed and seen as a threat to the status-quo: hence his opponents have all been promoted highly in the Labour hierarchy.
But I think the writer falls into a trap about Starmer: too many people may regard him as a non-entity, a grey man but this is deceptive. There is something profoundly sinister and rotten about Starmer, from the beginning and to the core. The grey man is a mask for something truly revolting.
Starmer appeared basically from nowhere (like Macron, like von der Leyen et al.) His background is shrouded, cosmetically suspicious and his rise to power vertiginous. But what do we really know of his non public facade? Very little except that he cultivated the idea that he was working class and ordinary, lies. Being a strongly secretive yet highly successful lawyer he became Crown Prosecutor, hence the knighthood. We know he ignored the Savile case until the latter was dead and the former had moved on, he ignored the rape gangs in the north of England, but was active in persecuting Assange and eviscerating anything of the ‘liberal’ voice in The Guardian and other media.
Then he gets into parliament double quick in a safe seat too, happenstance…the wifey and kids are kept very much in the background except that Starmer proudly announces that he follows their Friday night is Sabbath nite rituals, his handlers must have appreciated that. They also appreciated his worm in the bud sabotage of Corbyn whose dangerous radicalism (opposing NATO and the War Party ) caused sleepless nights in high places. So, Starmer and friends initiate the rumour that Labour is infested by rabid anti-S ism and The Friends of Jizzrael eagerly pick up the ball to subvert Corbyn-who weakly did nothing to crush these lies. However, the 2017 election called by timeserver PM Teresa May do this or that backfired on the Tories and on Starmer’s faction. Labour did well and this made BREXIT a bigger issue than ever. Thus Starmer intensified his subversions and rumour mongering, adding an ambivalence about BREXIT, positing another referendum to antagonise working class voters. He allied himself with a fat female fellow London MP and former ally (later dropped…) Lady Nougat. The trick worked and Boris Cowson roared to victory in 2019 and Starmer could take over Labour and purge Momentum members and expel Corbyn from the about party and others in a ruthless realignment- Out went Stop The Wars in came NATO worship, export of arms, collaboration over Gaza, money for Zelensky non stop, and austerity, corporatism, surveillance, war worship, more mass immigration and total authoritarian control of British life via a captive, fawning media. A Statesman was born, or was he?
Starmer’s Landslide Victory of just 2 years ago was as faux as his grey man posture- the crippled electoral system delivered Starmer a huge majority despite less people voting for Labour than did in the ‘disaster’ of 2019 under Corbyn ! Nice one Keir! So what went so wrong?
A lot, and all of it behind he scenes that we are not allowed to hear about. Starmer’s lust for power, hatred of dissidence (forbidding Labour MPs to support strikes, talking down to Unions, promotion of obedient nonentities -many already had to resign over corruption/ineptitude) was at odds with Britain’s vanishing economic prowess and its descent into third rate disfunction- public services in disarray, a private sector corrupt and predatory. Bigging up Britain’s world role via endless subversion by MI5/6 began to falter. Something had to give-enter Starmer….Many on here like to suggest that Sir Keir has a very odd sexual life and thus is open to blackmail-could be true. But a reason for his demise is somehow linked to dangerous and insane British attempts at meddling on the international stage- Truss was purged as PM over her indiscretions over Nordstream and other military adventures. It is possible that the gut turning love in between Zelensky and Starmer-EU has something to do with this fall of numerous PMs from the Pygmy Throne of Britain’s lost Empire….
As for Burnham Andy- his very convenient parachuting into a safe Labour seat, despite Starmer’s open attempts earlier this year to prevent such a thing, the endless media chatter and now love in for an orderly transition of power in the ‘National Interest’ is highly suspicious. Burnham even LOOKS like Starmer except for dyed black hair, same mouth, same glasses, and above all- same policies. The only difference is that Burnham sports a trendy North Country accent and is thus not ‘posh’ or too tainted by London, yet. His Cabinet will be all Starmer apparatchiks . Is Burnham going to scale back on war mongering? Be critical of any US admin not just the one of Turdrump? Is he ever going to tell it how it is over Gaza, stop the spy flights for Jizzrael? Recognise the right of Iran to exist? Denounce the open Russophobia /hypocrisy and war mania of the top EU leaders ? Control corporations, make the law apply equally to all great and small. ? Change the voting system of Britain, abolish the House of Lords and Law Lords and have a democratically elected Senate? Turn off the endless cash flow to Zelensky and spend on Britain’s needs in its cities, countryside, health and well being instead?
Don’t hold your breath. For if he attempted any of this he’d be outside 10 Downsyndrome St. snivelling and self pitying in a resignation speech just like Starmer, Sunak, Truss, Johnson, May, Cameron before him. Seven in ten years in No.10 Seven Year Itch. Burn Andy, Burn!
