Iran has warned of “a decisive and immediate response” to any deployment of military vessels by European countries in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the Islamic Republic alone holds the authority to maintain security in the strategic maritime corridor.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi made the remarks in a post on his X account on Sunday, after France and Britain announced their decision to deploy warships to the region.
“Whether in times of war or peace, only the Islamic Republic of Iran can establish security in this strait and will not allow any country to interfere in such matters,” he said.
Gharibabadi said that France has announced plans to send its flagship aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, while the UK has indicated it will send a warship to the area in an effort to allegedly preserve freedom of navigation.
“Any deployment and stationing of extra-regional destroyers around the Strait of Hormuz, under the pretext of protecting shipping, is nothing but an escalation of the crisis, the militarization of a vital waterway, and an attempt to cover up the true root of insecurity in the region,” he warned.
He also emphasized that maritime security cannot be ensured through military posturing, particularly by those nations who, by “supporting, participating in, or remaining silent in the face of aggression and blockade, are themselves part of the problems.”
The Iranian diplomat further pointed out that the root of regional insecurity lies in the illegal use of force, consistent threats aimed at coastal states, and a disregard for international law as outlined in the United Nations Charter.
“The Strait of Hormuz is not the common property of extra-regional powers; it is a sensitive waterway adjacent to coastal states,” Gharibabadi said.
“The exercise of Iran’s sovereignty over this strait and the establishment of its legal frameworks fall within Iran’s rights as a coastal state,” he added.
France and Britain are leading efforts to create an international coalition to break Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, but only after a deal between the US and Iran is secured.
In response to the US-Israeli aggression, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to shipping associated with the aggressors and their allies, sending oil prices soaring.
Iran began enforcing much stricter controls last month following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a blockade targeting Iranian vessels and ports.

Reform UK could scrap migrant housing plans across its newly acquired UK councils, Nigel Farage says. The party leader confirmed Reform would “put the needs of local people first” and “look very hard at leaving” resettlement programmes, which provide housing for millions of asylum seekers around the country.

Reform gained control of 14 councils in this week’s local elections as the party made stunning gains at the expense of Labour, including in heartland regions it had dominated for generations. Mr Farage’s comments followed Reform-led Lancashire County Council’s announcement last week that it would stamp out Starmer and labours racism.

A couple of commenters have suggested the UK and France are sending ships with the intention of getting them attacked so they can call for an Article 5 defensive pact. This may be true what they’re after but they’ll be really stretching it and many NATO countries will refuse to join. The US and Israel illegally attacked Iran so the UK and France would be joining an illegal action, so coming under attack for that surely cannot be grounds for a legal defensive coalition. Maybe Israel has the dirt on Starmer and Macron to force their involvement? That’s the only thing that makes sense.

Tony Ridley, who has died aged 92, created the Tyne & Wear Metro and Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway, and initiated the planning to cope with the near-tripling of passengers on the London Underground since the early 1980s under the Thatcher government

But he was forced to resign as chief executive of LU in the wake of the King’s Cross fire of November 19 1987, which killed 31 people, being blamed for the absence of a fire safety culture within the organisation.
The Tube’s safety record was relatively good despite ageing infrastructure and arcane working practices; until the fire, which began beneath an escalator, there had – apart from the 1975 Moorgate disaster, the cause of which has never been identified – been just four passenger fatalities in 43 years. But a rigid commitment to safety on the track had not been matched elsewhere.

after hearing evidence for 91 days, in November 1988 Desmond Fennell QC concluded that a lighted match dropped on to the escalator in breach of a ban on smoking had started the fire, which flared up because of a previously unknown “trench effect”.

Fennell’s report accused management of complacency: station staff received little or no fire training, and were under instructions only to dial 999 once a blaze was out of control. Fennell blamed Ridley and Sir Keith Bright, chairman of London Regional Transport, for the culture that had allowed the disaster to happen.
The Transport Secretary, Paul Channon, handed them copies of the report and invited them to consider their positions. Bright resigned on the spot; Ridley wanted to distance himself from it
His resignation was an unfortunate end to a progression of jobs in which he demonstrated a flair for identifying demand for public transport and devising projects to meet it. Even at LU, he had not only begun catching up on a 50-year backlog of maintenance and renewals, but had helped launch the Docklands Light Railway.
Ridley’s successor recalled: “BR decided to pull out all the stops with a scheme of its own and presented it to the Transport Minister John Peyton one Monday morning – only to discover he had awarded us the grant the previous Friday.” Metro opened in 1980; it now has 60 stations, carries more than 100,000 passengers a day and is still expanding.
He quickly grasped that the Tube was “old and tatty”, with a maintenance backlog and outdated working practices. It was also out of favour with Margaret Thatcher’s Government because of Ken Livingstone’s fare-cutting campaign. In June 1982 services were cut to save £4 million a year; deeper cuts of 12 per cent followed that autumn, jeopardizing safety
Ridley under pressure from Thatcher unveiled plans to slim staffing over 20 years from 23,500 to 16,500, eliminate guards and introduce driverless trains. Staff struck over one-man trains on the East London Line, but they were introduced. Eight stations were proposed for closure, plus two outlying lines; the Aldwych and Ongar branches eventually went.

With passengers up 40 per cent from a historic low of 480 million in 1982 (today 1.2 billion), Ridley worked to increase Tube capacity while modernising the system. By the time the DLR – which he insisted must be managed separately – opened in 1987, planners were working on extensions for the Bakerloo, East London, Jubilee and Metropolitan lines, and remodelling of the most congested stations.

Then came the King’s Cross fire, at the end of the evening rush hour. At the scene, Ridley said: “We have examined the area underneath the escalators and there was no evidence at all of what we feared – rubbish collected there.” he could not see how it happened
He disputed the unions’ claims that the fire resulted from spending cuts.
At the Fennell inquiry, Ridley denied that management had been complacent over safety. It had been turning an “aged, ineffective and fairly tatty” system into one carrying a record number of passengers. He agreed that the safety of passengers must come first

The European Union on Monday approved sanctions on Israeli settlers “guilty of supporting the extremist and violent colonisation of the West Bank”, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on social media. Israel called the sanctions “arbitrary and political” and vowed to stand ‘”for the right of Jews” to control and settle in the West Bank.
European Union foreign ministers on Monday agreed new sanctions on Israeli settlers over violence against Palestinians, as a change of government in Hungary ended months of blockage.
“It’s done. The European Union is sanctioning today the main Israeli organisations guilty of supporting the extremist and violent colonisation of the West Bank, as well as their leaders,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot wrote on social media.
