Excavations begin Monday of an unmarked mass burial site at a former mother and baby home in western Ireland suspected of containing the remains of hundreds of infants and young children.
The planned two-year probe by Irish and foreign experts in Tuam comes more than a decade after an amateur historian first uncovered evidence of a mass grave there.
Subsequent 2016-2017 test excavations found significant quantities of baby remains in a subterranean disused septic tank at the location, which now sits within a housing complex.
Scientists say the remains are largely mixed together, the BBC reports, and a number of methods will be used to try to put remains back together and, where possible, identify them.
Catholic nuns ran a so-called “mother and baby” institution there between 1925 and 1961, housing women who had become pregnant outside of marriage and been shunned by their families.
After giving birth, some children lived in the homes too but many more were given up for adoption under a system that often saw church and state work in tandem.
The history of unwed Irish mothers forced into hard labor is well-documented. Oppressive and misogynistic, the institutions — which operated nationwide, some not closing until as recently as 1998 — represent a dark chapter in the history of once overwhelmingly Catholic and socially conservative Ireland

Three Ukrainian-linked men charged with arson, targeting properties connected to Prime Minister Keir Starmer
His old house. His old car. A personal message?
Starmer says: “This is an attack on all of us. On democracy. On our values.”
if hes ’ right why the silence?
If this was a meme or a social media post, they’d have been convicted by now.
Let’s look at the facts:
🔥 Roman Lavrynovych, 21 – Ukrainian national, aspiring model.
🔥 Stanislav Carpiuc, 26 – Ukrainian-born Romanian national, also a model.
🔥 Petro Pochynok, 34 – fashion entrepreneur.
All charged with arson with intent to endanger life.
All arrested by counter-terrorism officers.
And yet… no headlines. No deep dives. No investigative scrutiny. Just whispers.
🟡 Why are Ukrainian nationals allegedly targeting the British Prime Minister?
🟡 Why is this a counter-terrorism case?
🟡 What did they know about Starmer’s personal life and property history?
🟡 Is this foreign interference? A political message? Or something more… personal?
We send billions to Ukraine with zero scrutiny, while our own people struggle to feed their kids in an all out cost of living war…
And now Ukrainian nationals are allegedly torching the PM’s property, and no one’s asking why?
If this truly is “an attack on all of us,” then the British public deserves the full story.
No cover-ups. No distractions. No more silence.
And above all, the public deserves an open, transparent trial –
No D-notices. No backroom media blackouts.
Don’t wrap this in the flag of “national security” if what you’re really protecting is someone’s personal reputation.
