The Pentagon is deploying the USS Tripoli (pictured above), a Marine Amphibious Ready Group, and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East, a U.S. defense official confirmed to Fox News on Friday.
The Tripoli, stationed out of Japan, will take about two weeks to reach the Middle East. The deployment includes around 2,500 U.S. Marines accompanying the ARG and MEU.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved a request from U.S. Central Command for an element of an amphibious ready group and attached Marine expeditionary unit, according to three U.S. officials who spoke to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the deployment. Such units typically consist of several warships and 5,000 Marines and sailors.
The Japan-based USS Tripoli and its attached Marines are now headed for the Middle East, two of the officials told the Wall Street Journal. Marines are already in the Middle East supporting the Iran operation, the officials said.
The deployment follows Iran’s attacks on the Strait of Hormuz, which have paralyzed traffic through the strategic waterway. The attacks have disrupted the global economy and driven up gas prices, posing a military and political challenge for President Trump.

Is Washington trying to intimidate Iran with the prospect of a amphibious landing somewhere on its coastline? If so it won’t work.
To make a meaningful Marine landing on Iran’s coast the U.S. would need to deploy a force substantially bigger than that currently aboard the USS Tripoli.
As of December 2024, there were approximately 168,527 active-duty personnel in the United States Marine Corps. To make a successful amphibious assault on Iran would require a force ten to twenty times the current size of the entire US Marine Corps. So this is not really a viable option. Ed.

Yes I agree, the editor’s comments are on the money. But apart from the numbers involved any assault on Iran will mean the destruction of US forces. Their ships will be easily sunk and any landed troops will be slaughtered.

Trump attacked the military sites on Kharg Island to damage Iran’s ability to export its oil (another attack on China?) and an amphibious landing by US marines anywhere on Iran’s coastline can face the same assault. If he tries it he will be sending many marines to their deaths or capture, and when this foolish war is over, if Israel doesn’t kill him for losing Israel a US marine may try to do him in.
Bout time they are sending the marines, no less the long way there. 2 weeks. Probably will need to stop off somewhere to fix the toilets. Pitiful failure. They gained no territory, but Ottoman Turkey gained prestige and used it as an excuse to exterminate most of the Christian Armenian population as ‘collaborators’ with the British & Russians. A holocaust denied to this day by Turkey & allies, despite enormous evidence and 1.5 million deaths.

Perhaps American airforce invincibility is being debunked in Iran and Trump will need to stage landings?
