1. AI will save lives if we let it
“ChatGTP could have prevented a mass shooting event, if only we listened to automatic flags!” That’s the story. Months before the shooting allegedly carried out by trans-woman Jesse Van Rootselaar, interactions with ChatGPT were flagged up by an automatic warning system but the silly humans didn’t tell anyone.
From the Wall Street Journal:
Months before Jesse Van Rootselaar became the suspect in the mass shooting that devastated a rural town in British Columbia, Canada, OpenAI considered alerting law enforcement about her interactions with its ChatGPT chatbot, the company said.
While using ChatGPT last June, Van Rootselaar described scenarios involving gun violence over the course of several days, according to people familiar with the matter.
Her posts, flagged by an automated review system, alarmed employees at OpenAI. Internally, about a dozen staffers debated whether to take action on Van Rootselaar’s posts. Some employees interpreted Van Rootselaar’s writings as an indication of potential real-world violence, and urged leaders to alert Canadian law enforcement about her behavior, the people familiar with the matter said.
See, if only they hadn’t been so concerned about privacy and human rights and pre-crime, the police could have done something. We should just let AI automatically record all our interactions and report those it deems necessary directly to the government.

2. Facial Recognition Just Keeps on Going
Fresh off facial recognition technology being deployed across The Underground by London’s Transport Police, Merseyside Police are announcing they will be deploying live facial recognition tech at the Everton-Manchester United game as part of a…
“wider policing operation designed to keep fans and the public safe”
As the match plays out, the LFR will be scanning the crowd and…
…comparing faces captured on a live camera feed against a secure, predetermined watchlist made up of individuals wanted for serious offences, subject to court orders, or who pose a risk to the public or to themselves.
Which is just lovely, isn’t it?
3. Migrant soldiers for the EU army?
Foreign Policy has got a great idea:
EU nations should offer enlisting in the military as a fast-track path to citizenship for immigrants.
Because what harm can come from a whole bunch of soldiers who are desperate not to be deported, so will follow any orders at all provided they get to stay in the country?
Or, indeed, what could go wrong with non-citizen soldiers asked to enforce martial law on a native population with whom they share no cultural or linguistic ties?
BONUS: Hilarious “experiment” of the week
The expert scientists over at The Guardian Labs want to see what it will be like living in the future when Climate Change – sorry, “global heating” – has made it all hot and stuff. To that end, they’ve put some guy in a really hot room and had him walk on a treadmill for a long time.
Turns out he gets really hot.

It’s not all bad…
Amazon-owned US supermarket Whole Foods is scrapping their “pay with palm” system after a lot of backlash. The scheme enabled Amazon account holders to add their biometrics (finger/palm prints and facial scans) that would then allow them to instantly pay at any Amazon-affiliated business.
An Amazon spokesman told the Daily Mail that “a lack of widespread adoption” had caused the program to be nixed.

Baftas ‘heckling’: What really happened during Alan Cumming’s speech?

Viewers of the 2026 Baftas were left confused after host Alan Cumming appeared to be heckled during his opening monologue.
Celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B Jordan, and Emma Stone arrived at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday night (22 February) to honour the best in British film.
Hosting this year’s ceremony was Cumming, who took over the mantle following a two-year stint by fellow Scotsman David Tennant.
Cumming appeared to run into trouble early on, however, when he was “heckled” during his opening monologue. The Traitors US star forged ahead seemingly without paying any attention to the disruption.
At other points during the ceremony someone could be heard shouting words such as “boring” and “f*ck off, and het away ya poofter

It was explained by Cumming at the live event – which took place hours before the broadcast – that such disturbances might occur due to the promise not to promote homosexuals

labour says we’re a nation of animal lovers – so why won’t they stop kosher cruelty ?

Everyone knows we are a nation of animal lovers, unless – in these politically correct times – it upsets a vocal ethnic minority, when appeasement becomes more important than animal welfare or anything else for that matter. Even now as Labour puts forward its much-vaunted animal welfare strategy “to prevent animals suffering”, it has deliberately omitted the compulsory labelling of kosher meat, even though it’s hailing its ban of boiling live lobsters and the more humane slaughter of farmed fish!
That is why tomorrow in parliament I am introducing a Bill for the compulsory labelling of halal and kosher meat. I’m not calling for a ban of these meats,like i should just a modest requirement for labelling, so we all know what we are buying and eating. Properly labelling halal and kosher meat should be just as important for those who particularly want to buy it as for those who particularly don’t want to buy it, so everyone benefits. The unique process of halal and kosher meat requires the animal to have its throat slit. In the case of halal meat the animal is often stunned before it’s killed, although it might not be, and for the shechita killing (for kosher meat) there is no pre-stunning at all. This lack of stunning causes the animal to experience severe pain and grotesque suffering

Now, UK law does require animals to be stunned before slaughter, but an exemption was made for both ‘schechita’ (Jewish) and some ‘halal’ (Muslim) methods. This was to cater for the religious requirements of the UK Jewish population (280,000 people) and the Muslim one, now amounting to 20 million people, which has almost doubled in size in the last decade.
However, what started as a limited exemption has rapidly become the norm. According to the National Secular Society, the selling of this ‘religious’ meat is now widespread in supermarkets and other food outlets unlabelled to unwitting consumers who are buying it whether they want it or not.
It is now being served in our hospitals and prisons – without anyone being told – and non-stunned produce is being used by 17 local councils in schools, the majority of which are not Jewish or islamic faith schools, without parents or children having the first idea about it.

James Balderson above mentions legitimately the labelling of halal and kosher meat, which is extremely cruel to the animals involved. Let’s put the reminder out there that National Socialist Germany went all the way and banned this cruel treatment of livestock in the 1930’s. Just one more fact concerning 1930’s Germany that you are not supposed to mention for fear of upsetting certain ethnic loud mouths and assorted corrupt politicians.
