Lucifer is not mentioned in the Hebrew or Greek Septuagint bibles. In Hebrew and Greek, Satan is ‘the adversary’. Lucifer is the translation of Isiah 14:12’s ‘bright star’. They incorrectly identified Lucifer as a fallen angel, thus the instant comparison to Satan, when the passage is speaking of a King of Babylon, a man and not an angelic being. The passage most likely refers to a symbolic or archetypal king of Babylon, representing the pride and downfall of rulers, rather than a specific historical king.
However, given the timeframe of Isaiah’s ministry (circa 740–700 BC), the Babylon mentioned is not yet the dominant empire it would later become under Nebuchadnezzar II (605–562 BC). At the time, Babylon was a city-state often under Assyrian control, and Isaiah’s prophecy anticipates its future rise and fall.
The immediate historical context does not point to Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled over a century later.
