Former nuns and support worker sentenced over historic abuse at children’s homes

A former nun who assaulted vulnerable young people at children’s homes more than 40 years ago has been jailed while another former nun and a retired support worker were also sentenced.
Nuns Carol Buirds, 75, known as Sister Carmel Rose, and Eileen McElhinney, 78, who was known as Sister Mary Eileen, as well as ex-support worker Dorothy Kane, 68, were found guilty of subjecting multiple victims to cruel and unnatural treatment over nine years, following a trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in November.The offences took place at two homes in Lasswade, Midlothian, and Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, run by the Catholic order the Sisters of Nazareth between the early 1970s and early 1980s.
The victims, who are all now adults, were aged between five and 14 when the abuse began.The offences took place at two homes.
Witnesses for the prosecution included former residents, an ex-staff member and a social worker.
Buirds, of Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, was jailed for 15 months after being found guilty of 13 charges including assault to severe injury, the Crown Office said.
Her offences included rubbing urine-soaked bedding on children, and forcing food and soap into their mouths, and beating with canes
She locked one child in a cupboard and another in an unlit cellar without access to water, and was found to have repeatedly assaulted children, often using implements such as a belt, a wooden ruler, and a stick, prosecutors said.
McElhinney was found guilty of five charges, including violently assaulting young children.
She also forced them to stand in cold showers and sit in cold baths, and used a hairbrush to hit children on the bare buttocks, prosecutors said.
The former nun hurt another boy with a metal comb, refusing to stop brushing his hair despite him being in pain.
Kane was found guilty of two charges of cruel and unnatural treatment for repeatedly grabbing a boy, including by the hair, and restraining him by forcing her knees on to his chest.
She also failed to intervene when witnessing another member of staff assaulting the child, and forced a second young person into a cupboard before locking him in.
Some abuse had sexual overtones
The three women were sentenced at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday.
McElhinney, of Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, was made subject to a 12-month probation order and told to perform 240 hours of unpaid work, and given a nine-month curfew between the hours of 4pm and midnight.
Kane, of Lasswade, was given a community service order with a requirement to complete 150 hours of unpaid work within nine months.
A five-week trial heard evidence including police interviews with Kane and McElhinney, who denied children were ever struck with an implement and denied knowledge of a “punishment book”.
Support worker Kane said she “couldn’t remember”, in a police interview recorded on video which was released by the Crown Office after sentencing.
She denied knowing children had been struck with an implement, and said “No” when asked if she considered them to be appropriate, adding she “would have intervened” if she had seen a punishment, she also denied putting her hand down the front of a boys trousers and fondling him
Faith Currie, procurator fiscal for Lothian and Borders at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said: “Carol Buirds, Eileen McElhinney and Dorothy Kane were entrusted with the care of vulnerable children, but instead they betrayed that trust and inflicted lasting harm through their criminal actions.
“It is now a matter of public record that they gravely breached their duty of care while holding positions of trust and authority at Nazareth House.
“Although these offences took place decades ago, such abuse has never been acceptable and should never have happened.
“The charge of cruel and unnatural treatment reflects the sustained and systematic nature of this abuse over an extended period.
“Scotland’s prosecutors remain fully committed to bringing non-recent child abuse cases before the courts, no matter how much time has passed since these crimes were committed.”
One survivor who gave evidence against Buirds said: “There is only one word to describe my time at Nazareth House – fear.
“I was sent to that home as a young child where I lived constantly on edge, scared I would be punished no matter what I did.
“No-one wanted to listen, no-one wanted to hear about the abuse I endured, and I have carried that trauma throughout my life alone. Until today.

Having been in religious life myself for a number of my formative years, but not aspiring to ordination of any sort, except to be a bit of a gadfly in various endeavors, I can testify that all the priests and religious I knew and have known since were straight and kept their vows. The exceptions to the rules are “the” exceptions, they were and still are the few who see the rules and their vows not so much as “binding” but rather as suggestions, sort of like the way most nominal Christians these days regard Ten Commandments.
Also, it is not so much that Russia is the great boggy man of the world as the Fatima people proclaim, or that the “smoke of Satan” began to corrupt the Church in the 1960’s with Vatican II, that is the main problem. There most certainly is a great battle going on between good and evil, both inside and outside of the Catholic Church, and the writings of Malachi Martin do shed a great deal of light on a good many of the evils – Masonic and even Satanic. However, regarding the 3rd Secret of Fatima with predictions of global destruction with the apostasy of Catholic prelates running the Church, I sort of smell CIA and tend to think we are, once again, somehow being gaslighted. The real evil of the day is our dishonesty and chosen blindness to the evils at our own doorsteps and coming from our own nations.
If any nation should be “consecrated”, I would think that it would have to be more by consent of the people, with far more of them first having to be converted to Christ. As for Russia, clearly apart from all of its crimes against people, and mainly through its dire history of communist rule, the most evil nations for the past 100 years happen to be our own. To think that Russia is some kind of special stronghold of Satanic forces and needs to be magically, or divinely “consecrated” by bishops from other nations, as a kind of exorcism, skirts the issue of first consecrating and converting people in their own dioceses and nations to Christ. It would also seem that any exorcism would require reaching down deeply into a soul for a will and choice of God over the possession.
To think that the ground zero of atheistic communism which infected Russia came from Russia and not from elite powers in our own nations is simply ludicrous. As the stricture from the Gospel says.

Perhaps, you do not realize it, that this past special targeting exercise to muscle a few dioceses in my Church into bankruptcy and to pressure the rest of it into a greater compliance and neutrality with respect to the more politically-correct and totally decadent and debouched moral norms, has turned now into a major grown industry in lawsuits against alleged perps in all walks of life, and in all institutions, with the numbers on a per capita basis outnumbering the alleged perps in Catholic religious life who have been given all of the attention.
Why then so much derision against the Catholics if the actual incidence is the same or less? I presume the reason is the fact that the strongest moral teachings against abusing kids or anyone for that matter, comes from the teachings of my Church, and especially regarding sexual abuse of any kind, which standards clearly go against that liberal secular crowd who are trying to break down all our tradition moral standards to replace them with this new-normal, anything-goes ones.

I have come to believe there is a whole spectrum of aethereal entities that sometimes present themselves according to a witness’s belief system. From medieval times the optics of the Church has framed these entities as angels and demons. In the modern age a belief in ET visitation has caused these entities to be framed thus. But the Pagans knew best even if we have come to view these beliefs through the romanticised Victorian-modern lenses of Barrie, Lewis, and Tolkien.
The phenomena in question is the faery realm. Conan Doyle believed in faeries although like UFO hoaxers would connive in the modern age he was subject to a cruel deception. The (in)famous picture of winged fairies at the bottom of the garden was a monumental disservice to truth on this subject. An entire new paradigm of aethereal taxonomy that was known by common folk, romanticised by poets, and ridiculed by urban dwellers now begs to be explored.
Curiously, the featured article book is one I put in my save to buy later basket last week. Suffice to say, possessions, schizophrenic “voices” – see Jerry Marzinsky – and “grey aliens” are, I believe, parasitic energy vampires. Very unpleasant, like being in river with a crocodile to be sure. “Good” and “evil” while being labels that we may certainly attribute in approximate ways, possibly do not exist in the absolute sense the Christian religion insists. This absolute sense allows religion – as others here point out – allows for top-down control. Control systems LOVE to polarise.
I believe these aethereal entities with the cofactor of human observation manifest themselves in different ways. A common experiences is encounters with orbs. I believe these energy forms that cross from the aether to plasma state conjure up with human participation, humanoid encounters and abductions. Many of these cryptids: shadow people, Mothman, Dogman etc., manifest glowing eyes; these I submit are the non-participatory aspect of orbs. Faery lore mentions that one should never look to closely at the faery lights and avert one’s gaze. So “red eyes” and “orbs” are at the intersection of participatory manifestation and external plasma formation IMO.
Suffice to say faery folklore was not tolerated by the Church who have seen faery-lore as a challenge to their authority. In truth the Church has often appropriated where it couldn’t suppress. E.g. allowing the fairy on the Christmas tree. The modern control system is university peer review scientism that requires large funding and hoop jumping in order for “truth” to be asserted. Of course this system is also statist.
Both Church and the “modern scientific method” offer different lenses with which to view these phenomena. Sometimes these lenses are useful and sometimes they are not. Unfortunately these two lenses provide a false dichotomy. Intelligent visitors to this website gradually come to see how the world is continually presented by TPTB in terms of false choices. The ignorant and passionate seek one of two solutions provided by the system rather than seeing another possibility.

Further…I really recommend John Keel’s “Mothman Prophecies”. It is far more than about Mothman. I read this book years ago with the prior assumption that witnesses were lying, mistaken, or duped, and Keel was unreliable etc., and didn’t get much from it. Then I read it again recently. Keel and Vallee as proponents of the ultraterresterials viewpoint – that is to say, faeries in pounds, shillings, and pence – have been rejected by the corporate media. Keel was a shaman but he didn’t know it.

Going back a few years, I had friends round my house, who left around midnight.
When they’d gone, I opened the windows up to let some cold air circulate and have the smokey atmosphere dissipate.
I leaned out of the window and across the narrow road opposite, hovering next to the electricity sub station, were two glowing orbs. They seemed to be feeding from the generator. I was entranced by them.
I told them that they were absloutely beautiful (which they were) and that I felt privileged to be in their company. T
To reassure myself, I asked them if they could demonstrate that they were real and not just a figment of my imagination. As soon as I asked the question, one of them shot toward me with lightning speed and stopped right in front of my nose. I guffawed with laughter. I was delighted. The orb then returned to its companion and they continued to hover as before. I watched them for a little while longer before thanking them and excusing myself to go to bed. Its better not to dwell too long in the company of the numinous. Something that became apparent to me, upon reflection, was that there was no parallax evident. The orb was the same size across the road as it was in front of my face ( lightly smaller than a football.)
I think that they liked me because I was respectful and loving toward them.
To this day I consider it one of the greatest privileges of my life to have briefly interacted with the orbs on affectionate terms.
They are independent plasmatic intelligences and have nothing whatsoever to do with spooky cryptid manifestations.
Theories are for those who enjoy theorizing. Enigmas are supposed to be enigmas, to tantalise and excite the mundane. I’ve met them and I was wonderously uplifted. They live in Hessdalen.

Those with a disposition to the arts may have an innate porosity to these phenomena. I theorise that manifestation is a co-creation between an aetheric eco-system as orbs and the human aetheric mindspace. I also theorise that cryptids are not necessarily evil but signals and warnings. Mothman being iconic in this respect. The manifestation being the co-creation that is both real and unreal at the same time.

Many people have experienced orbs prior to abduction. Your experiences are of course unique to you. They sound benign overall. This I theorise is because of your own experiences and nature that co-create with these natural phenomena. Someone like Karla Turner who experienced her soul being stolen, I theorise might have been co-creating with her own orbs because she felt academia was stealing her soul. All speculation I know, but Tycho Brahe made the observations but Kepler provided the theorising.
These conversations are possibly helpful for many people who have not come forward with their own experiences. Maybe they will bump into them years from now and provide much needed signposts. The path of the real truthseeker is lonely but it probably couldn’t be otherwise….

Have your experiences been rural or semi-rural (liminal), and have they altered with movement between urban living and otherwise?
I believe trees, rivers, wildlife, and rocks etc provide the neural network from which faery manifests; urban life alienates human beings and inhibits resolutions of artistic yin into creative yang… Interestingly as maybe an ecological response, the time of the land enclosures in Britain were a time of increased orb/faery energy that then subsided. The “spaceman” Indrid Cold appeared to Woodrow Derenberger along a fairly new road in Appalachia on a new road. This I speculate was faery in response to possible ecological incursion…

A former nun who assaulted vulnerable young people at children’s homes more than 40 years ago has been jailed while another former nun and a retired support worker were also sentenced.
Nuns Carol Buirds, 75, known as Sister Carmel Rose, and Eileen McElhinney, 78, who was known as Sister Mary Eileen, as well as ex-support worker Dorothy Kane, 68, were found guilty of subjecting multiple victims to cruel and unnatural treatment over nine years, following a trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in November.The offences took place at two homes in Lasswade, Midlothian, and Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, run by the Catholic order the Sisters of Nazareth between the early 1970s and early 1980s.
The victims, who are all now adults, were aged between five and 14 when the abuse began.The offences took place at two homes.
Witnesses for the prosecution included former residents, an ex-staff member and a social worker.
Buirds, of Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, was jailed for 15 months after being found guilty of 13 charges including assault to severe injury, the Crown Office said.
Her offences included rubbing urine-soaked bedding on children, and forcing food and soap into their mouths, and beating with canes
She locked one child in a cupboard and another in an unlit cellar without access to water, and was found to have repeatedly assaulted children, often using implements such as a belt, a wooden ruler, and a stick, prosecutors said.
McElhinney was found guilty of five charges, including violently assaulting young children.
She also forced them to stand in cold showers and sit in cold baths, and used a hairbrush to hit children on the bare buttocks, prosecutors said.
The former nun hurt another boy with a metal comb, refusing to stop brushing his hair despite him being in pain.
Kane was found guilty of two charges of cruel and unnatural treatment for repeatedly grabbing a boy, including by the hair, and restraining him by forcing her knees on to his chest.
She also failed to intervene when witnessing another member of staff assaulting the child, and forced a second young person into a cupboard before locking him in.
Some abuse had sexual overtones
The three women were sentenced at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday.
McElhinney, of Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, was made subject to a 12-month probation order and told to perform 240 hours of unpaid work, and given a nine-month curfew between the hours of 4pm and midnight.
Kane, of Lasswade, was given a community service order with a requirement to complete 150 hours of unpaid work within nine months.
A five-week trial heard evidence including police interviews with Kane and McElhinney, who denied children were ever struck with an implement and denied knowledge of a “punishment book”.
Support worker Kane said she “couldn’t remember”, in a police interview recorded on video which was released by the Crown Office after sentencing.
She denied knowing children had been struck with an implement, and said “No” when asked if she considered them to be appropriate, adding she “would have intervened” if she had seen a punishment, she also denied putting her hand down the front of a boys trousers and fondling him
Faith Currie, procurator fiscal for Lothian and Borders at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said: “Carol Buirds, Eileen McElhinney and Dorothy Kane were entrusted with the care of vulnerable children, but instead they betrayed that trust and inflicted lasting harm through their criminal actions.
“It is now a matter of public record that they gravely breached their duty of care while holding positions of trust and authority at Nazareth House.
“Although these offences took place decades ago, such abuse has never been acceptable and should never have happened.
“The charge of cruel and unnatural treatment reflects the sustained and systematic nature of this abuse over an extended period.
“Scotland’s prosecutors remain fully committed to bringing non-recent child abuse cases before the courts, no matter how much time has passed since these crimes were committed.”
One survivor who gave evidence against Buirds said: “There is only one word to describe my time at Nazareth House – fear.
“I was sent to that home as a young child where I lived constantly on edge, scared I would be punished no matter what I did.
“No-one wanted to listen, no-one wanted to hear about the abuse I endured, and I have carried that trauma throughout my life alone. Until today.

Having been in religious life myself for a number of my formative years, but not aspiring to ordination of any sort, except to be a bit of a gadfly in various endeavors, I can testify that all the priests and religious I knew and have known since were straight and kept their vows. The exceptions to the rules are “the” exceptions, they were and still are the few who see the rules and their vows not so much as “binding” but rather as suggestions, sort of like the way most nominal Christians these days regard Ten Commandments.
Also, it is not so much that Russia is the great boggy man of the world as the Fatima people proclaim, or that the “smoke of Satan” began to corrupt the Church in the 1960’s with Vatican II, that is the main problem. I have come to believe there is a whole spectrum of aethereal entities that sometimes present themselves according to a witness’s belief system. From medieval times the optics of the Church has framed these entities as angels and demons. In the modern age a belief in ET visitation has caused these entities to be framed thus. But the Pagans knew best even if we have come to view these beliefs through the romanticised Victorian-modern lenses of Barrie, Lewis, and Tolkien.
The phenomena in question is the faery realm. Conan Doyle believed in faeries although like UFO hoaxers would connive in the modern age he was subject to a cruel deception. The (in)famous picture of winged fairies at the bottom of the garden was a monumental disservice to truth on this subject. An entire new paradigm of aethereal taxonomy that was known by common folk, romanticised by poets, and ridiculed by urban dwellers now begs to be explored.

Suffice to say, possessions, schizophrenic “voices” – see Jerry Marzinsky – and “grey aliens” are, I believe, parasitic energy vampires. I believe these aethereal entities with the cofactor of human observation manifest themselves in different ways. A common experiences is encounters with orbs. I believe these energy forms that cross from the aether to plasma state conjure up with human participation, humanoid encounters and abductions. Many of these cryptids: shadow people, Mothman, Dogman etc., manifest glowing eyes; these I submit are the non-participatory aspect of orbs. Faery lore mentions that one should never look to closely at the faery lights and avert one’s gaze. So “red eyes” and “orbs” are at the intersection of participatory manifestation and external plasma formation IMO.
Suffice to say faery folklore was not tolerated by the Church who have seen faery-lore as a challenge to their authority. In truth the Church has often appropriated where it couldn’t suppress. E.g. allowing the fairy on the Christmas tree. The modern control system is university peer review scientism that requires large funding and hoop jumping in order for “truth” to be asserted. Of course this system is also statist.
Both Church and the “modern scientific method” offer different lenses with which to view these phenomena. Sometimes these lenses are useful and sometimes they are not. Unfortunately these two lenses provide a false dichotomy. Intelligent visitors to this website gradually come to see how the world is continually presented by TPTB in terms of false choices. The ignorant and passionate seek one of two solutions provided by the system rather than seeing another possibility.
Further…I really recommend John Keel’s “Mothman Prophecies”. It is far more than about Mothman. I read this book years ago with the prior assumption that witnesses were lying, mistaken, or duped, and Keel was unreliable etc., and didn’t get much from it. Then I read it again recently. Keel and Vallee as proponents of the ultraterresterials viewpoint – that is to say, faeries in pounds, shillings, and pence – have been rejected by the corporate media. Keel was a shaman but he didn’t know it.

Going back a few years, I had friends round my house, who left around midnight.
When they’d gone, I opened the windows up to let some cold air circulate and have the smokey atmosphere dissipate.
I leaned out of the window and across the narrow road opposite, hovering next to the electricity sub station, were two glowing orbs. They seemed to be feeding from the generator. I was entranced by them.
I told them that they were absloutely beautiful (which they were) and that I felt privileged to be in their company. T
To reassure myself, I asked them if they could demonstrate that they were real and not just a figment of my imagination. As soon as I asked the question, one of them shot toward me with lightning speed and stopped right in front of my nose. I guffawed with laughter. I was delighted. The orb then returned to its companion and they continued to hover as before. I watched them for a little while longer before thanking them and excusing myself to go to bed. Its better not to dwell too long in the company of the numinous. Something that became apparent to me, upon reflection, was that there was no parallax evident. The orb was the same size across the road as it was in front of my face ( lightly smaller than a football.)
I think that they liked me because I was respectful and loving toward them.
To this day I consider it one of the greatest privileges of my life to have briefly interacted with the orbs on affectionate terms.
They are independent plasmatic intelligences and have nothing whatsoever to do with spooky cryptid manifestations.

Those with a disposition to the arts may have an innate porosity to these phenomena. I theorise that manifestation is a co-creation between an aetheric eco-system as orbs and the human aetheric mindspace. I also theorise that cryptids are not necessarily evil but signals and warnings. Mothman being iconic in this respect. The manifestation being the co-creation that is both real and unreal at the same time.
Further that manifestation take place according the cultural zeitgeist across the faery ecosystem, from faeries, to airship mysteries to, to faeries in spaceships… As I have said before I believe flying saucers are of human origin but hijacked by the faery/aether mindspace 😊 It is you I again thank for opening my eyes to this aspect of reality…
Many people have experienced orbs prior to abduction. Your experiences are of course unique to you. They sound benign overall. This I theorise is because of your own experiences and nature that co-create with these natural phenomena. Someone like Karla Turner who experienced her soul being stolen, I theorise might have been co-creating with her own orbs because she felt academia was stealing her soul. All speculation I know, but Tycho Brahe made the observations but Kepler provided the theorising.
These conversations are possibly helpful for many people who have not come forward with their own experiences. Maybe they will bump into them years from now and provide much needed signposts. The path of the real truthseeker is lonely but it probably couldn’t be otherwise….
