Actually, there has been a revival of Christmas spirit this year. On Christmas eve I saw there were many Christmas concerts on TV! This is a positive sign.

“Did you enjoy the Holiday Concert?” the school principal asked my friend.
“Yes, but why didn’t you call it a Christmas Concert?’
“Oh I can’t. The Superintendent said the concert must be inclusive of all the diverse cultures in the school. We are not allowed to mention Christmas, Christ, or Jesus.”
My friend was bewildered. The school is 95% Christian. Yet all the carols with Christian references were performed as instrumentals. Instead they recited “In Flanders Fields,” a poem commemorating the dead from World War One!
The state has always repackaged folk – pagan beliefs – as top-down control systems. The American “Holidays” is indeed a repackaging of Christmas as Christmas in its turn repackaged a collection of other beliefs including solar astronomy with its anthropomorphism of the Sun.
As nature claims back industrial slag heaps with grass and new topologies, the people continue to refashion top-down tropes for our own needs. Castles that were once mafia redoubts for feudalistic extortion become somehow subsumed into the landscape as natural wonders; their trespasses have been forgiven.
There are many enfolded mythologies of Christmas that preserve half understood folklore. Fairy lights on a Christmas tree suggesting elementals, while presents underneath may allude to the amanita mushroom. Cultural memes are pagan vessels travelling into the future that enlightened people might someday unwrap as the many unwrap their presents today…
I enjoy all the festivities of Christmas because I know that the overlay of Christmas has never eclipsed the celebration of the sun resuming its northerly path by which the days start to grow longer. I can enjoy the echo of a once shiny new mindspace fashioned to preserve the Roman Empire even though “Holidays” is the new top-down mindspace fashioning that seeks to replace that.
