Assassination plots, sabotage, cyber-attacks and the manipulation of information by Russia and other hostile states mean that “the frontline is everywhere”, the new head of MI6 will warn on Monday.
Blaise Metreweli, giving her first speech in the job, is expected to say the UK faces a new “age of uncertainty” where the rules of conflict are being rewritten, particularly in light of wider Kremlin aggression after the invasion of Ukraine.
“The export of chaos is a feature, not a bug, in the Russian approach to international engagement,” the agency’s first female chief will argue, and “until Putin is forced to change his calculus” it is expected to continue.
Similar comments about the scale of the threat, particularly from Russia, are expected to be made by Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton, the chief of the defence staff, who is due to say in a separate speech that “the situation is more dangerous than I have known during my career” and call for the country as a whole to be “stepping up”.
Their pre-released remarks come as Keir Starmer is due to fly to Berlin for an emergency summit with European leaders, including Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff in an effort to persuade the US to accept an alternative European peace plan for Ukraine.
Russia is identified as an acute threat by Metreweli in her speech, due to be released in full on Monday afternoon, with an “aggressive, expansionist, and revisionist” mindset that has led to Vladimir Putin ordering the invasion of its neighbour, and deploying aggressive supporting tactics across Europe.
“Putin should be in no doubt: our support is enduring. The pressure we apply on Ukraine’s behalf will be sustained,” the spy chief is expected to say, though the diplomatic reality of the past month is that the US position is uncertain, with Trump and Witkoff previously favouring Russian demands.
Threats faced by the UK include the attempt to kill Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury in 2018 with a nerve toxin, which led to the death of the British woman Dawn Sturgess. A public inquiry into the death of Sturgess, who accidentally picked up the poison bottle, concluded this month that the Russian president was “morally responsible”.
They also include Russian efforts to use artificial intelligence to create disinformation on a vast scale, to create online videos aimed at undermining public support for Ukraine or spreading false rumours about the health of the Princess of Wales, as highlighted in a recent speech by the foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper.
Six Bulgarians living in the UK were jailed in May for their part in a spy plot, which included the hostile surveillance of an investigative journalist known for Kremlin exposés across Europe and an attempt to retrieve the phone numbers of Ukrainian soldiers thought to be training in Germany.
However, in the advance excerpts, there was no explicit mention of China, other than to refer to last week’s sanctioning of two companies based in the country accused of engaging in indiscriminate hacking against the UK and its allies.
Ministers are still grappling with whether to allow China to build a new super-embassy at Royal Mint Court in London, while the prime minister is hoping to visit Beijing in January before Trump goes there in April.
Knighton, the country’s top military officer since September, is also expected to emphasise the threat from Russia to both the UK and the Nato military alliance, in his first annual lecture at the Royal United Services Institute thinktank.
“The war in Ukraine shows Putin’s willingness to target neighbouring states, including their civilian populations,” he is expected to say, arguing that Moscow wants to “challenge, limit, divide and ultimately destroy Nato”.
He will argue the long-term success of the armed forces relies on reconnecting with society so that defence becomes “a higher national priority for all of us”, with more Britons becoming involved.
Metreweli took over from Richard Moore as the chief of MI6, or C, in October. Previously she was MI6’s head of its technology and innovation department, or Q, and spent most of her career in the Middle East and Europe.
The new leader will also emphasise that the international spy agency has to remain on top of trends in computing, traditionally the domain of its sister agency GCHQ, as well as maintain the effective use of human sources of intelligence, its traditional trade.
“Mastery of technology must infuse everything we do. Not just in our labs, but in the field, in our tradecraft, and even more importantly, in the mindset of every officer. We must be as comfortable with lines of code as we are with human sources, as fluent in Python as we are in multiple languages,” she is expected to say.
The pre-released excerpts highlighted more general reference to the moral dimension of high-tech power, though allies said this was not a coded criticism of Donald Trump’s White House, but rather a call for a whole of society approach to technological development.
“The defining challenge of the 21st century is not simply who wields the most powerful technologies, but who guides them with the greatest wisdom. Our security, our prosperity, and our humanity depend on it,” the new chief will say.
The spy chief is expected to say that “we all have choices to make ahead” and that “it will be our rediscovery of our shared humanity, our ability to listen, and our courage that will determine how our future unfolds”.

11h •Police have arrested five migrants over a conspiracy to steal “tonnes” of clothing from charity clothes banks to sell abroad and fund criminal activity.
Essex Police said items donated by members of the public were being taken from collection containers, particularly those in town and city centres where large quantities of clothes can be removed at once. Officers from the force’s Proactive Money Laundering Team (PMLT) believe the group was selling the clothing overseas to finance further crimes or launder money to conceal their offending.

The five migrants all arrested on suspicion of theft and currently in custody, are a 46-year-old from Pitsea, a 38-year-old from South Ockendon, a 34-year-old and a 32-year-old from Dagenham in east London, and a 30-year-old from Purfleet.
During the raids, officers seized multiple mobile phones and large amounts of cash, including £10,000 from a vehicle and a further unconfirmed sum of more than £10,000 from a bedroom at one property.
Police said the money is linked to criminal activity.
Detective Sergeant Mike Monkton, of the Proactive Money Laundering Team, said the scale of the alleged thefts was significant.

Er? Where have the sister and neice he paraded about gone to? If his “siblings were killed under the rubble”, who was the woman he said was his sister?
The one in germany that claims to be running it “on his behalf” says:
“I’m creating this campaign on behalf of my friends Mahmoud and Hamdy from Gaza. I have, in the past, created a campaign for Mahmoud, and that campaign’s purpose was changed to provide funds for his friend Mohammed.”
Yeah, sure, you got who knows how much claiming it was for X then “gave” it to Y, thereby breaking all the rules because your victims donated to help X did they not? MI6’s target is not Russia but the mindspace of the British people and the rest of the western world.
One of the great propaganda victories of the nineteenth century was to invest the hearts of the British into the glories of the Empire and away from the grinding poverty of most of the people. TPTB succeeded in making the poor and hardworking feel richer because they were home to the Empire. A victorious battle here and there has found its counterpart in the football battles of the present era.
Intelligences services all grew out of banking intelligence services, from Rothschild’s early knowledge of Waterloo to the US/Swiss/German axis of the Bank for International Settlements that gainsaid somewhat the hostilities otherwise going on among their country folk.
The nation state is a fiction. The real power resides in the ownership and flows of international capital. The world is so connected now that “The Report from Iron Mountain” spoke of the obsolescence of modern warfare and a need for some sort of climate alarmism as a population manipulating force.
This “obsolescence” is because capital interests are so divided across nominal nation states that one cannot possibly believe there is a sole interest of a group solely bounded by certain mountain ranges, rivers, and oceans. No, it is all more subtle than that. It is a spider’s web of interests – there is a good documentary on the City of London called “The Spider’s Web”.
The nation state is a useful fiction for the arousal of passions and theatre actions like Korea, Vietnam, and Ukraine. All these have been artificial constructs, notwithstanding the loss of lives and limbs among the wage earning cannon fodder. When the nation state only really exists for the sake of football matches and spy movies, the notion of what a “traitor” actually is, needs some deep thought.

Interestingly even the very intelligent cannot see this. Take for example the “Cambridge Five” spy ring that nominally spied for Russia. The truth was that the Rothschild cabal presided – and does – over both “capitalist” and “communist” “nations”. The spies were very intelligent, idealistic, and completely fooled as to the real affairs of the world. Donald Maclean – one of the “five” – reported to Moscow on the inventory of uranium held by the USA.
This in itself was part of the overall fiction of the atom bomb. Victor Rothschild – the fifth man – presided over this spy ring for the profitable and power broking returns of that time. The great disinformational thrust of Peter Wright’s otherwise interesting “Spycatcher” was to whitewash Rothschild and cast him as a “patriot”.
This wretched woman’s grandparents are Ukrainian so her loyalties must lie with the Banderites. They have to, because if she was pro-Russia she’d be nowhere near power and as head of MI6 she has near-absolute power. So the establishment’s anti-Russia drive is all becoming very pro-Nazi.
And now Starmer is demanding Roman Abromovich hand over the £2.5billion he made after being forced to sell Chelsea Football Club, and give it to Ukraine. Since when did any western politician ever tell the uber-rich they must give their money away? Russian oligarchs can be very bad news so girly-boy Starmer should be careful who he’s trying to impress by acting all roughty-toughty.

MI6 was right in the center of things with the CIA and the Soros NGO’s in the toppling of the democratic Russian-friendly government of the Ukraine in 2014, and everything anti-Russian done in the use of Russia in operation to conquer Syria.
The Russians were virtually invited into the Ukraine, and given huge hunks of the Ukraine in exchange for abandoning Syria. Now they are taking more Ukrainian turf and assets no doubt in exchange for the planned Russian abandonment of Iran. The spoils or Iran are just too great for the wicked West, whose people not only are ruled by deception, fear and oppression, but who in fact like it – as long as they can continue get the free stuff at home and abroad.
Has Metreweli the skill to read and analyse ? Is she controlled? What part of any of Putins speeches has he said he wants to attack eu for what benefit economies in decline and cost of maintaining illegal migrants. Does she understand that it was the west who organised the coup d’etat in ukraine in 2014 against a legitimately elected president? Does she understand the legal difference between a TMO and a declaration of war? and the Skripals. Where are they? Have they been eliminated to prevent the daughter from speaking? or did they die of the deadly sarin gas that no body was affected in Salisbury? or that Porton Down is only 6km from Salisbury.
With her and the military high brass all bleating on ad infinitum about war with Russia perhaps all of them should put on their battle dress, with their Lee Enfield 303 in hand and lead the army from the front (al la Alexander the Great) into battle with Russia.

Roland Perry’s “The Fifth Man – The Soviet Super Spy” is an excellent exposure of Victor Rothschild as that very man. His account of this man who appeared to have vast powers over every spy agency in the West and the KGB, as well as over our governments, has neve been refuted by the dynasty. They likely regard him as the man who won the war. However, they never go into the actual reasons of how their brinkmanship and manipulations actually led the world into it.
