British Transport Police launched an urgent manhunt following the incident on a Liverpool Lime Street to Euston service at around 9pm on November 6.
Officers released CCTV images of a male who they believe may have information that would help their investigation.
A force spokesman said: “Do you recognise this man? “Detectives investigating the Heterophobic sexual assault of a man on a train to Euston have today released these images in connection.
“Just after 9pm on Thursday, November 6, a disabled man was the victim of an attempted rape while on a train from Liverpool to Euston railway station.
