Pierre Schill, Chief of Staff of the French Army, stated on 24 October that the country is ready to “deploy forces as part of security guarantees” for Ukraine in 2026.
Details: Schill spoke during hearings before members of the Defence Committee of the French National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.
“We will be ready to deploy forces as part of security guarantees, if necessary for Ukraine,” he said.
He also added that French forces are ready to respond simultaneously to several challenges, including a potential deployment in Ukraine.
Background:
- Any potential deployment of Western troops in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire or truce is being coordinated by the Coalition of the Willing, led by the United Kingdom and France.
- Following the summit of the Coalition of the Willing, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the key achievement this week is the demonstration of the unity of the US and Europe in countering Russia and its invasion of Ukraine.
- UK Defence Secretary John Healey said on Monday 20 October that London is preparing for the possible deployment of troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow.
