On September 11, 2025 — a date already etched into American memory — Rep. Brian Mast quietly introduced a bill that could strip passports from US citizens for criticising Israel. It’s called the Department of State Policy Provisions Act (H.R. 5300), and buried within its text is a power grab that should terrify anyone who believes in free speech. The bill gives the Secretary of State sweeping authority to revoke U.S. passports if an individual is deemed to have provided “material support” to any foreign organization. On paper, that might sound reasonable. But here’s the catch: what counts as “support” is left deliberately vague.
They deny its racist but critics warn that under such broad language, dissent itself could be criminalized. Protesting against Israel’s military actions? Sharing articles that expose human rights abuses in Gaza? Donating to an aid group the U.S. doesn’t approve of? All of that could be rebranded as “terrorist support” — and with the stroke of a pen, your passport could be revoked. No trial. No appeal. No due process.
