This was the biggest nationalist rally in recent memory – perhaps ever.
Well before the march started, thousands of people flowed over Blackfriars bridge, or came up from Waterloo station, flags everywhere, hailing from everywhere – from Yorkshire roses to the diamond of the Isle of Wight.
What exactly it was that “United the Kingdom” was left vague, for people to cheer their own particular cause.
This was billed as a free speech rally and the most common chants we heard were “Keir Starmer’s a w*****r”, “oh Tommy Tommy” and “we want our country back”.
That means different things to different people.
Dawn, up from Southampton and wearing a red sequined jacket, said it was because the country was “getting overrun”. She said she was talking only about illegal migration.
Others didn’t draw that distinction.
Danny from south Birmingham was holding a sign that said: “Send them Back” – and said he was unhappy with migration “in general”. He came to “stand up for what we believe in, the religion and identity of our country”.
That’s been a difference with this rally compared to past ones I’ve covered – an overt Christian nationalism.

When the crowd arrived at Whitehall, they were led from the stage in a chant of ‘Christ is king’. And then a public recital of the Lord’s Prayer shortly after that. It’s an important difference. Not just a flag to rally around, but a religion too.
At the centre of it all, the anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson.
When Robinson took the stage, it was more like a football match or festival than a political rally.
“We rode the storm, we weathered the storm, and today we are the storm,” he shouted hoarsely.
That’s not much of an exaggeration, not when Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, made a virtual appearance to back Robinson.
Other speakers included those who can be uncontroversially classed as far right. And thugs clashed violently with police.
And it’s clear that simply writing off protesters as far right doesn’t really capture what’s going on either. The audience is too broad to fit just that label.
The tinderbox summer of protest promised by activists never really caught flame. Instead, there has been the slow, steady burn of nationalism.
This was its culmination but also, those here hoped, the beginning of something even bigger.

There is nuance as you state. I’ll give my own impression after speaking to Griffin a few times as well as knowing deputy leader Simon (MI5) Darby more:
Griffin was from a more dynastic type of operation as per the well-informed anonymous poster. I sensed for him it was all a business – money grubbing. Maybe he was of the old school masonic persuasion.
Darby I see as civil service careerist who according to Steve Edwards “came from nowhere” and was parachuted to a high position. Many of us have perceived he was Griffin’s handler or the state’s point man into the infiltration of the BNP. He may be therefore like Common Purpose – more “contemporary”, salaried, and less of the dynastic aristocratic fingers in the pie compared to the Griffin dynasty. Griffin may have been sufficiently narcissistic like say Thatcher to believe in his own destiny and only partially cognisant of deeper state handling. This is an area I am unsure of.
And I think in high positions of authority we can never be too sure of how monolithic a power structure is. To the world internally conflicted individuals may present a common front. So the best I can say of Griffin is that he was a money grabber who may have realised that a condition of his continuing political career at the time was to accept a state attaché into the BNP and thereafter there “may” have been some “good” he could have achieved after monetary skimming – him – and ideological skimming – the state. This is putting Griffin in the best possible light that I can.
I left the BNP in 2007 because I believed Griffin was just taking far more than he should from the party in money. Interestingly, many of us thereafter wondered why the state didn’t go after him in the same manner as the Americans went after Al Capone; not necessarily tax but the some sort of accounting irregularities. This was something of a head scratcher that one can resolve by wondering if Griffin – at best a money grubbing narcissist or at worst a conscious state asset – was tasked with bleeding the party to death anyway.
But returning to the Griffin-Darby binary system, I now wonder whether Griffin has never been forthcoming about Darby-MI5 because some sort of pact had been agree upon. Griffin to keep the loot and keep quiet about MI5 interference in the party lest the taxman etc. comes calling.
Darby was less than an orator and observed to be fairly passionless on stage. I got the impression his speeches were patchwork quilts of what others had said that he had put together. He was the BNP’s Martin Borman – a bureaucrat . And maybe in other state infiltrated organisations around the world we may choose to ask just “Who the deputy leader is?”. I mean, in schools, I have observed it is often the “deputy” head who is the “enforcer”…
