Keir Starmer is pushing for everyone in Britain to be forced to sign up for a digital ID card after Emmanuel Macron demanded action to tackle the scourge of illegal working in Britain. The Mail has more.
Sir Keir Starmer told the Cabinet he would be “exploring options around digital ID” as part of a wider package of reforms designed to make it harder for illegal migrants to live and work in this country.
Downing Street confirmed Ministers are examining proposals for a digital ID scheme 15 years after the idea was abandoned following an outcry about the impact on civil liberties.
Under one option, anyone applying for a new job would be required to produce their digital ID to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in this country. Similar provisions could also be introduced for those moving to new accommodation, making a benefit claim or seeking to access public services.
Labour ruled out ID cards as recently as July this year, with Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds saying the idea was “not our approach”.
Sir Keir has been told by President Macron to address the “pull factors” attracting migrants to Britain in return for French help in stopping the boats.
Whitehall sources said Tony Blair has also continued to push the idea behind the scenes.
And, with Sir Keir coming under intense pressure to be seen to be acting on illegal migration, he has now changed tack.
The PM’s official spokesman told reporters that the Government would “always look at what works”.
Asked if the idea could eventually mean compulsory ID cards for all, he said: “We are willing to look at what works when it comes to tackling illegal migration.”
Questioned about the civil liberties row that ended the last bid to introduce compulsory ID cards, the spokesman said Ministers believed “the debate has changed since the last time we had this discussion”, with people more relaxed about the idea of having to prove their identity online.
The idea is set to be discussed at an emergency meeting chaired by Sir Keir aimed at accelerating work to shut down the UK’s 200 migrant hotels.

You can’t give IDs to people when you don’t know who they are. This is clearly meant for indigenous western populations and was a keen part of Blair’s ideology. It’s not the card they want so much, it’s the database. Just a few decades ago western politicians bragged we weren’t the Soviet Union but soon we’ll be that and much worse.
By the time they’ve linked all surveillance technology in one database including facial recognition in shops, you won’t be able to buy groceries if the database doesn’t recognise you. They won’t need central bank digital currency for that. CBDC is a probably the lifeboat they can jump into when our currencies collapse through the damage that’s been done to them from creating too much with no commodities to back them; the weaponisation of currencies through sanctions; and too much gone to too few and not enough to the rest to sustain a real economy. Sir Keir Starmer has dropped a heavy hint that he’s preparing to sack Angela Rayner if as inquiry found she broke ministerial rules by failing to pay £40,000 in stamp duty. The Prime Minister vowed to “act on” the conclusions of his independent adviser’s investigation into his Deputy Prime Minister.
In an interview with the BBC, Sir Keir said: “There’s a clear procedure. I strengthened that procedure. It is now taking place. I am expecting a result pretty quickly. I do want it to be comprehensive, as you’d expect. And then, of course, I will act on whatever the report is that’s put in front of me.”

Asked directly whether he would sack Ms Rayner, Sir Keir said: “Angela Rayner has referred herself to the independent adviser. My experience is he will be comprehensive in the report that he gives me, it will be quick, and that’s what I’m expecting.
“And so I want to let that process take its course. I did strengthen that process, so she’s done the right thing, referred to the independent adviser, and now he will do his work and report back to me.”

NHS surgeon jailed for fraud over amputation of his own legs

An NHS vascular surgeon has been jailed for 32 months after admitting fraud relating to the amputation of his own legs and possessing extreme pornography of genital mutilation.
Neil Hopper, 49, pleaded guilty to two charges of fraud by false representation relating to claims totalling £466,653.81 made to two insurance companies that his legs had been amputated due to illness rather than self-inflicted injury. He also admitted three charges of possessing extreme pornographic images, relating to videos by a website called the EunuchMaker run by Marius Gustavson, which depicted genital mutilation.
Hopper, of St Erme, Truro, Cornwall, entered guilty pleas to the five charges against him at Truro Crown Court on Thursday.
