Of course, Occam’s razor seldom works very well when it comes to ancient history and we still have to rely on the surviving records for historical truths. In anything political were conflicting interests are at stake and the powerful are making deals, there are always wheels within wheels.
For religious beliefs which are constantly being polluted with political and temporal interests, the cleansing pursuit comes down to the search and connection to the true God. For Christians his true nature of God is revealed through the life, death and rising of the person of Jesus Christ. The stakeholders who conspired to rid the world of his presence are the same them as today, and they do not really matter when you are connected to Him.
