Interest in the German Armed Forces as an employer is on the rise, with a 28% increase in military recruitment so far this year compared to the same period in 2024, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday.
As of July 21, around 13,750 new recruits had been hired in 2025.
There are various pathways to working for the Bundeswehr, Germany’s military.
The ministry said the growth applies to service members on fixed-term contracts and those enrolled in voluntary military service, which is usually for young people just out of school.
In total, the Bundeswehr currently counts about 183,100 men and women in uniform, marking an increase of about 2,000 people compared to a year ago.
The number of young people doing voluntary service has also risen by around 15%, reaching 11,350.
The Defence Ministry attributes the uptick to targeted recruitment campaigns and heightened concerns over international security. The government sees the rising numbers as a positive sign, especially amid efforts to bolster troop strength.
At the end of August, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Cabinet is expected to vote on a draft law aimed at overhauling military service.
If approved, the new system could take effect in early 2026. It emphasizes voluntary participation and more attractive conditions, including higher pay, with a goal of recruiting up to 15,000 new conscripts per year.
