Five Israeli soldiers were killed and two others seriously wounded during combat in northern Gaza on Tuesday, the Israeli military said.

Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, the chief spokesman of the military, identified the five soldiers who were killed and said they were carrying out an attack on a Hamas brigade in the northern town of Beit Hanoun intended to take out the armed group’s positions above and below ground.

The incident highlighted that Hamas is still able to carry out deadly attacks against Israeli soldiers, even though Israel has severely weakened the group’s military wing over nearly two years of a devastating war, killing thousands of its members and many of its top commanders.

In the past month, 21 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza, including seven in late June in the city of Khan Younis.

General Defrin said that a military inquiry had found that the Israeli soldiers were killed and wounded by the detonation of three explosive devices in a matter of minutes.

Abu Obeida, the spokesman of Hamas’s military wing, said on social media that militants had delivered a blow to the “prestige” of the Israeli military in a “complex” operation in the northern town of Beit Hanoun.

Abu Obeida did not provide details of what happened.

The soldiers’ deaths came as talks were underway in Qatar to try and seal a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas, and secure the release of hostages in Gaza. “I think we’re close to a deal on Gaza,” President Trump said on Sunday. “Could have it this week.”

The Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, in which some 1,200 people were killed and around 250 others taken hostage, ignited the war in Gaza.

Israel’s subsequent bombing campaign and ground invasion have reduced cities in the enclave to rubble and more than 57,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Gaza health ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians. On Monday, the health ministry said that more than 100 people had been killed on the previous day.

The Israeli military has continued to carry out powerful airstrikes in Gaza in recent days, reinforcing a feeling among civilians that nowhere in Gaza is safe. Witnesses said that the strikes had killed many civilians; the Israeli military has asserted that it has been targeting militants.

Israel and Hamas have engaged in several rounds of indirect negotiations after Israel restarted the war in March following an earlier cease-fire. The talks have repeatedly failed to result in a new agreement.

Key issues under discussion in the current negotiations include the distribution of aid in Gaza, the parameters for the withdrawal of Israeli forces and assurances on ending the war

Hamas has demanded that the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a contentious, Israeli-backed aid group, stop operating in the enclave, according to a Hamas official, an Israeli official and a person briefed on the negotiations, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive details. Israel has insisted that the group continue to hand out food, arguing that the system undermines Hamas’s ability to derive financial benefits from aid entering Gaza.

Since the foundation began operations in May, scores of hungry and desperate Palestinians have been killed and wounded on their way to collect parcels of food from its distribution sites.

Witnesses have said that Israeli troops have opened fire on the approaches to the aid hubs. On many occasions, the Israeli military has said that its forces have fired “warning shots.”
