A residential building in Tehran that was struck by Israeli warplanes early on Friday

News Brief – June 13, 2025

Israel launched a wave of air strikes across Iran early on Friday morning with over 200 Israeli warplanes.

Around one hundred sites linked to Iran’s military or its nuclear program were targeted

At least six Iranian nuclear scientists have been killed, as well as a number of senior military commanders.

At around 3.00 am Israeli jets struck several residential buildings in Tehran that were home to senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commanders, as well as the homes of senior Iranian nuclear scientists.

The Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri and commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Hossein Salami were both killed in the pre-dawn strikes.

Videos circulating on social media reportedly show widespread destruction in residential areas of Tehran.

Iran has denounced the strikes as a “declaration of war” and senior Iranian military commanders are reportedly preparing to launch retaliatory counter strikes against Israel.

Meanwhile, President Trump has warned of even more brutal attacks to come if Iran didn’t agree to a deal over its nuclear program.

However, Trump’s warning will only underline suspicions that the U.S.president had prior knowledge of the Israeli strikes and that the U.S. may even have helped Israel logistically to carry out the attacks.

Israeli warplanes also struck Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, although the Iranian authorities claim that the damage was limited to buildings on the surface. Iran’s more sensitive nuclear equipment is housed in bunkers deep underground.
