Germany has embarked on an ambitious expansion and modernization program as it prepares to restore itself as a military power.
In a speech earlier this month, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to “provide all necessary financial resources” to turn Germany’s military into Europe’s strongest.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Chief of Defense, General Carsten Breuer, has called for the complete rearmament of the Bundeswehr with modern weapons and equipment by 2029.
Various ‘experts’ claim that this is being done because once Russia has consolidated its hold over recently recaptured territory in eastern Ukraine it will look beyond, into Western Ukraine and possibly even further West.
That’s why Merz wants Germany to prepare for possible war with Russia.
Of course Macron and Starmer were talking a few weeks earlier about putting troops on the ground in Ukraine. But that didn’t materialise after Moscow made it clear that NATO troops in Ukraine would be totally unacceptable.
So now the timetable has shifted to the next three to five years. While the possible location for the conflict has shifted further west, from Ukraine to Poland and possibly even Germany.
It’s also no coincidence that Poland has embarked on a massive military build-up. Like Germany it’s also preparing for a wider conflict with Russia.
In essence, we believe that Europe’s leaders have been told to prepare for war with Russia. Starmer and Macron have backed away from their intial defiant stance toward Russia because neither has any credibility left.
- Starmer faces a real political threat from the rent boy scandal that could well wreck his premiership.
- While Macron faces similar questions over the sexual identity of his ‘wife’ Brigitte.
Either way neither man was viewed as fit to lead Europe into a war with Russia and further disclosures about both could wreck plans for a wider war with Russia.
So now it has fallen to newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to lead the fight.

Lavrov Calls German Army Plans ‘Very Worrying’

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday called Germany’s plans to build the “strongest” army in Europe a “very worrying” development.
“Many were immediately reminded of the last century, when Germany twice became the leading military power, and how much trouble that caused,” Lavrov said at a security conference in Moscow.
Germany, long reluctant to ramp up military spending since World War II, has shifted course in recent years, emerging as one of Ukraine’s most steadfast backers.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has also pledged to provide “all financial means necessary” to modernize Germany’s long-underfunded armed forces.
Berlin recently stationed a 5,000-strong armored brigade in Lithuania, making it the country’s first permanent foreign troop deployment since the end of WWII.
The Kremlin has frequently invoked the Soviet Union’s fight against Nazi Germany to rally domestic support for its invasion of Ukraine, portraying the conflict as a continuation of that historical struggle.
Russia and Germany had maintained relatively stable ties before the 2022 invasion, but Berlin has since become one of Kyiv’s main military and political supporters, a position Merz has vowed to uphold.
