In a world where convenience trumps nutrition, a groundbreaking study exposes the deadly consequences of ultra-processed foods—linking them to skyrocketing rates of hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and premature death. Presented at the ACC Asia 2025 conference in Singapore, the research analyzed data from 8.2 million adults across four continents, revealing a disturbing trend: the more ultra-processed foods people eat, the faster their health deteriorates.
Key points:
- A new study reveals that ultra-processed foods increase the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and early death.
- Every additional 100 grams consumed daily raises the risk of digestive diseases by 19.5% and all-cause mortality by 2.6%.
- Researchers warn of hidden additives, synthetic ingredients, and nutrient-deficient formulations in mass-produced foods.
- Governments and health officials urged to enforce stricter labeling and promote whole-food alternatives.
The silent killers in your pantry
Ultra-processed foods—those factory-made products loaded with synthetic additives, refined sugars, and industrial seed oils—are not just empty calories. They are engineered for addiction while stripping away essential nutrients. According to Dr. Xiao Liu, a cardiologist at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, these foods disrupt metabolism, gut health, and even mental well-being through:
- Blood lipid imbalances
- Gut microbiome destruction
- Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress
- Insulin resistance and obesity
Common offenders include:
- Sugar-laden cereals (high-fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes)
- Packaged cookies and candy (hydrogenated oils, emulsifiers)
- Processed meats (sodium nitrites, MSG)
- Soda and energy drinks (aspartame, phosphoric acid)
A dose-dependent health crisis
The study found that for every 100 grams of ultra-processed food consumed daily (roughly a small bag of chips or a sugary drink), the risks climb:
- 14.5% higher hypertension risk
- 5.9% increased cardiovascular events
- 19.5% spike in digestive diseases
- 2.6% greater chance of early death
Even more alarming? The GRADE assessment confirmed high-to-moderate certainty in these findings—meaning the evidence is undeniable.
Where did the term “ultra-processed food” come from?
The term “ultra-processed food” (UPF) was introduced by Brazilian nutrition researcher Carlos Monteiro and his team in 2009 as part of the NOVA food classification system. This system categorizes foods based on their level of processing rather than just their nutritional content.
The NOVA classification divides foods into four groups:
- Unprocessed or minimally processed foods (e.g., fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, milk).
- Processed culinary ingredients (e.g., sugar, salt, butter, oils).
- Processed foods (e.g., canned vegetables, cheese, cured meats).
- Ultra-processed foods (e.g., sodas, chips, fast food, packaged snacks).
Monteiro’s research highlighted how UPFs are linked to obesity and chronic diseases, leading to global awareness of their health risks.
How do ultra-processed foods differ from processed foods?
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are industrially manufactured products containing numerous additives, artificial flavors, and minimal whole food content. Unlike processed foods—such as canned beans, cheese, smoked fish, and bread—which are altered mainly for preservation or taste and retain recognizable ingredients, UPFs (like soda, candy, instant noodles, chicken nuggets, and frozen pizza) rely on artificial colors, emulsifiers, sweeteners, and preservatives. While processed foods may still provide some nutrients despite often being high in salt, sugar, or fat, UPFs are typically calorie-dense, loaded with unhealthy fats, sugar, and salt, and lack fiber and essential nutrients. The primary purpose of processed foods is to extend shelf life or enhance flavor, whereas UPFs are engineered for hyper-palatability, convenience, and long shelf life, prioritizing low cost and mass appeal over nutritional value.
Why are ultra-processed foods considered addictive?
Research suggests UPFs may trigger addictive-like eating behaviors due to:
- Hyper-palatability – High levels of sugar, fat, and salt stimulate brain reward pathways.
- Artificial additives – Flavor enhancers (e.g., MSG) and sweeteners (e.g., high-fructose corn syrup) may increase cravings.
- Rapid digestion & absorption – Refined carbs and fats cause blood sugar spikes, leading to overeating.
- Marketing & convenience – Easy access and aggressive advertising reinforce habitual consumption.
Studies comparing UPFs to addictive substances (like nicotine) suggest they may lead to loss of control over eating, similar to substance dependence. The solution to this is simple; making America healthy again won’t come from the top down. Individuals have to decide that their life is worth living and they have to choose to eat real foods, and maybe grow some of their own!

And look to see how all are Kosher certified. That certification comes as a fee, charged by an orthodox rabbinical organization. That fee is passed on to the consumer, of which, 99% are not practicing orthodox jews. Why should a religious practice requirement be paid for by 99% who do not practice that religion? This is a form of extortion, which enriches the orthodox rabbis and no one else.
If asked the fee, no rabbinical organization will even reply. If asked of the food company, if there is a reply, the reply will be that the fee is “proprietary”. If asked for a product to not be kosher certified, there will be no reply to that, either, regardless of what other religion is the consumer.
This is mostly bull poo.
Sheeple have been eating highly processed foods for decades and generally, these sheeple have never lived so long.
Japan, parts of Italy, France, and Spain, where there are areas, regions and even towns, where diet is often cited as the main reason for longevity, but the truth is more complicated.
Genes, local breeding, not inbreeding, stress, or way of life, such as work, living conditions. I remember reading about a guy who has eaten McDonalds.all his adult life, and he’s fine.
Also, it’s not so much that it’s processed, it’s how it’s processed.
So why are the medical and political elites so on the processed foods case. My best guess it that it’s a decoy from all the endocrine disruptors in our environment, and even pollutants associated with carbon vehicles, which shot up during lockdowns, funny that.
Then we have our collapsing magnitic field which could be damaging the most important parts of our cells, especially in baby lambs.
Did I mention chemtrails.
Diet dogooders are haters, they simply don’t want you to eat anything that’s nice.
You’re not allowed to enjoy a nice juicy thicko hormone and shit free steak, or artisan bread, because it has too much salt, or how about a fine wine, or port, with a montecristo cigar. Who are the deniers of life’s little pleasures, well, they are hating Nazis.
I love dogs, which are not generally known to be fussy about their cuisine. My dogs, Chewy and Little Blue, loved spam fritters so much that they’d go weirdly giddy and make high-pitched mewling sounds, whenever there was the promise of a deep-fried pork patty in batter, to hand.
If it’s good enough for Staffordshire Terriers, then it’s good enough for me. Spam – working class cordon bleu, in jelly of aspic. Mmm,..
LOL…
Of course being an obese slob doesn’t do much for the quality of your life, add to that bad choices and laziness and you have lazy fat bastards eating shit that can’t get off the sofa…
except to get on their knees..
I see Jonesy up above is quoting an old trope about how people have never lived longer..which may or may not be true..because my local graveyard dates back to the Norman conquest and full of old dead fossils in their seventies and eighties..one thing’s for sure though, they didn’t eat turd burgers and get about on mobility scooters…
so I suppose that’s hehe, progress.. and so’s bisphenol A…
Carl Jones -“thicko steak” shows that you add the “o” to “thick” on a reflex and are not thinking about your words
I am the fattest person in the area (true, the whole suburb), I live mainly off juice, fruit, lamb chops and eggs. The only processed food I ever consume is bread.
There is a lot more to this food thing than meets the eye, or in my case the mouth.
the best facts on how long folk are coming are from insurance companies who do long surveys for life insurance and they say the average life span in the UK is 70 years same as the bible says
the workers in the african mines owned by rothschild and oppenhiemer live to age 37
i wish carl jones would pop his clogs
Don’t blame the manufacturers. Blame the people who are the main customers for these products.
Customers are mainly the woke young (too ‘busy’ with Facebook and partying to cook properly), and lazy social security parasites who can afford to live on expensive takeaways.
chesterton: poor chap, the sheeple buried in your graveyard, with graves still standing, are the rich powerful twats of yesteryear. The vast majority of thicko sheeple are in disappeared graves, no trace at all, no headstand, no sign, gone for good.
Your graveyard is classic fake history. It gives you a very narrow biased view.
@Dunno Cohen
so inject all the kosher food with botulism or mrna vaccines & record all the buyers with face-recognition cameras over that supermarket section…then eradicate
untermensch vs Host…only one outcome for the deluded wandering inbreds..expulsion/pogroms etc
The bullying of Carl Jones is getting as tiresome as the man himself.
Can we not demonstrate some adult decorum and refrain from indulging petty spites, please?
How can you possibly be so aggrieved about someone you’ve never met and don’t know?
So what if Carl Jones is annoying? He’s still a man, like any other and the duress that his constant harping critics would have him endure, is unfair by anyone’s standards.
This doesn’t mean, of course, that I approve of you, Carl but neither do I dislike you so venomously. How could I? We’re all just voices in the ether, after all.
Last time I was in a graveyard I got irritated by the stone biographies, all these people who do nothing but die!
