The massive power outage that wreaked havoc in Europe is being blamed on a pair of likely solar plant breakdowns in southwest Spain, a report said.
By 7 a.m. local time Tuesday, more than 99% of energy demand in Spain had been restored, the country’s electricity operator Red Eléctrica announced. Portuguese grid operator REN said on Tuesday morning that all the 89 power substations had been back online since late last night and power had been restored to all 6.4 million customers.
Red Eléctrica said it identified two power generation loss incidents in southwest Spain – likely involving solar plants – that caused instability in the Spanish power grid and contributed to a breakdown of its interconnection to France, according to Reuters.
The economic cost of Monday’s blackout across the Iberian Peninsula could range between $2.5 billion to more than $5 billion, it cited investment bank RBC as saying.
We have never had a complete collapse of the system,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said in a televised address Monday night.
Emergency workers in Spain said they had rescued some 35,000 passengers on Monday who were stranded along railways and in underground tunnels.
Video that aired on Spanish television showed people evacuating metro stations in Madrid, and empty stations with trains stopped in Barcelona. Spain’s parliament was also left in the dark, public broadcaster RTVE reported.
The ATP Tour said play at the Madrid Open tennis tournament was suspended for the day due to the power outage.
In Portugal, several Lisbon subway cars were evacuated, courts stopped working and ATMs and electronic payment systems were affected. Traffic lights in Lisbon also stopped working during the outage.
REN, Portugal’s grid operator, described the incident Monday as a “rare atmospheric phenomenon.”
“Due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high-voltage lines, a phenomenon known as induced atmospheric vibration,” it was quoted as saying. “These oscillations caused synchronization failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances across the interconnected European network.”
However, on Tuesday, Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET said that it had not detected any “unusual meteorological or atmospheric phenomena” Monday and no sudden temperature fluctuations were recorded at their weather stations.
Eduardo Prieto, Red Eléctrica’s chief of operations, said the instability in the power grid caused the Spanish and French electricity interconnection through the Pyrenees mountains to split, leading to a failure on the Spanish side, according to Reuters. The news agency reported that some parts of France suffered brief power outages on Monday as well.
Ha, the systems are designed not to fail when these events, real or not, occour.
They first said a solar event in the upper atmosphere caused the outage, hmmm. Did phones and laptops fail? Did shipping and air traffic in flight have problems?

If solar power can’t be guaranteed to provide power even when the sun’s shining and the weather is hot then it’s just not a reliable power to run a country. Solar power is ideal for caravans, RVs, cabins in the woods etc but not all else besides. It’s more a small-scale provision than a nationwide system.
During the Texas winter blackouts a few years ago people with solar panels on their properties thought they’d have power when the grid went down, but many found that because their solar output was wired into the main grid to sell surplus power to the power company, when the grid went down so did their own system. The lesson is don’t sell your excess. Keep your solar power isolated from the grid to supply you with your own power when the grid fails. Just be sure to install a reliable inverter and battery pack.
I wonder if these major blackouts across western Europe are the reason a recent Treasury Committee statement says some businesses may need to be forced to accept cash? They say some vulnerable groups may be excluded from economic activity (public transport, leisure centres etc) but they never cared a damn for these people before–indeed, they’re often their first targets for clawing back benefits. I’d say it’s more likely they’re concerned in this class-ridden sh!thole Britain, panic caused by nationwide blackouts where nothing can be sold electronically and ATMs can’t issue cash, it could start a nationwide looting spree.
No alarms, no CCTV. Poor Brits enduring life’s hard times might take advantage of that. Looting didn’t happen across Europe because it’s more equitable there, more contented. They don’t have Britain’s dreadful class system where those on the bottom rung are made p!ss-poor then demonised for it. If we have nationwide blackouts in Britain the disaffected will trash this place after emptying it of value.

So it was only in Spain & Portugal / heard rumors it was all over Europe / supermarkets cafes etc. all were closed / unusual scenes of people shouting outside to friends living in higher floor appartments : bells & smart phones did not work / one small shop called the Paki del Bari run by a popular guy was opened & people had their battery lamps to take their goods from the shelves ….It was busier than usual….One young guy I heard saying to himself in the dark : Apocalyps….

Simple physics re: Frequency required that “renewables” can’t ever consistently attain( unlike Coal..Hydro Dams and Natural Gas etc)
IMHO they got off lucky in Europe during Spring and Summer(which one would think have longer solar days and wind etc)..this disaster should hopefully create a quick about- face and get back to more traditional , secure and reliable power sources.
