Dozens of members of the largest body claiming to represent British Jews have broken with the organisation’s leadership over their stance on the war in Gaza.
In an open letter, 36 members of the Board of Deputies of British Jews (BoD) criticised the Israeli government for resuming its assault on Gaza, warning that “Israel’s soul is being ripped out”.
Published in the Financial Times (FT) on Wednesday, the letter is the first public show of opposition to Israel’s war on Gaza from within the BoD.
Signatories urged the BoD, which has more than 300 elected deputies, to release a statement criticising the renewed offensive in Gaza last month, but the BoD has not done so.
“The inclination to avert our eyes is strong, as what is happening is unbearable, but our Jewish values compel us to stand up and to speak out,” the open letter says.
“Israel’s soul is being ripped out and we, members of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, fear for the future of the Israel we love and have such close ties to.
“Silence is seen as support for policies and actions that run contrary to our Jewish values.”
‘Most extremist of Israeli governments’
The letter criticises Israel’s assault on Gaza and settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, saying that “this most extremist of Israeli governments is openly encouraging violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, strangling the Palestinian economy and building more new settlements than ever”.
It further warns that the Israeli police force is “increasingly resembling a militia and repressive laws are being advanced as provocative partisan populism is bitterly dividing Israeli society”.
Harriett Goldenberg, vice-chair of the BoD’s international division, told the FT that while “some fear the appearance of disloyalty, we feel it is essential as British Jews to speak up”.
She added: “Otherwise, we run the risk of being complicit. In Jewish history, silence is not a good thing.”
The BoD said that it is a diverse organisation and “others would no doubt put more emphasis on the fundamental responsibility of Hamas for this ghastly situation”.
“This diversity is not unlike the politics of Israel itself, whose rambunctious democratic culture sees a fierce exchange of views about these excruciating life and death issues.”
This past September, the BoD slammed the Labour government for imposing a partial arms embargo on Israel and has consistently voiced support for Israel’s war on the besieged Gaza Strip.
They do what they have always done, confuse, take control, occupy two sides of all arguments and control from the background.

A wonderful, courageous and responsible event of the Jewish Council! (by the way, I, because I am from the East, immediately received in my head a consignment of memories of the time of the Soviets (=Advices), when there was a Soviet/Council/Advice literally for everything; for communism-socialism I speak). Board vice president Jonathan Arkush has strongly condemned the Reverend Stephen Sizer, an Anglican vicar who posted to Facebook an article accusing Jews and Israel of responsibility for the 9/11 attacks, adding to his posting an apparent endorsement that the article ‘raises so many questions’.

Board of Deputies calls for cancellation of Hamas book launch at LSE
The Board of Deputies has called for the cancellation of a scheduled launch of a book at the London School of Economics Middle East Centre which claims Hamas has been “vilified and demonised” since carrying out the October 7th massacre.
The Board of Deputies statement read:
“This event is advertised with the claim that ‘Hamas has been subject to intense vilification, branding it as “terrorist”, with its demonisation intensifying after the events in Southern Israel on October 7th 2023’. Despite the purported caveat that the book “does not advocate for or against Hamas” it is difficult to see how this is anything other than an attempt to whitewash a group proscribed as a terrorist organisation in this country. Not only should this event be cancelled, but the Home Office should take a direct interest in it.”

A ‘divisive and partisan’ resource on the Israel/Palestine conflict which was being sold on the Times Educational Supplement website, has now been permanently removed following protests from the Board of Deputies and teachers.
The ‘educational’ resource was brought to the Board’s attention by the Jewish community in Cardiff, where it was being used in a local secondary school. The 19-slide presentation made false equivalences between the IDF and Hamas terrorists and selectively used sources that reinforced an anti-Israel narrative.”

BLOG: An American perspective on fighting discrimination

This spring, the Board of Deputies helped to be one of only 10 Europeans to take part in the ‘First Responders’ programme with the Anti Defamation League and the European Jewish Congress. The two week trip focused on ADL’s dual mission; fighting the defamation of the Jewish people and for all human rights. The aim was to introduce us to methods of fighting discrimination used by Jewish communities in America.
The first week, in New York, offered an insight in to how communities there differ from what we have experienced in Europe. We had the privilege of meeting representatives from Chabad and learning about how chasidim live with hipsters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and how both groups are being affected by gentrification.

Due to our range of experiences and impressions about how our respective countries treat Jews, a particularly educational experience was the ‘Words to Action’ day. The programme…equips participants with a toolkit of techniques to react to (sometimes unintentional) incidents. These range in severity from uncomfortable to hate speech with a tangible method of qualifying how inflammatory a statement is and how extreme a response it warrants.

As ADL operates on a philosophy that for the protection of Jewish people, all minority rights must be defended – the conference was not solely about antisemitism. Aly Raisman started by talking about the Me Too movement. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein spoke of unity. Wajahat Ali advised that Jews and Muslims, ‘get out of your culturally isolated cocoons and disrupt it’. He warned that ‘tribal absolutism will not work. White supremacy is a drug and it’s coming after all of us.’
Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, spoke of ADL’s work in the civil rights movement (such as training law enforcement to be aware of bias and avoid prejudice). Their monitoring of patterns both online (social media , forums) and everyday (bumper stickers) allows them to alert officers of how to notice warning signs.
On the last day of the conference, a lobbying trip to meet with representatives in Congress was organised….

About the Commission on Antisemitism
The Board of Deputies of British Jews’ Commission on Antisemitism has been launched a year following the October 7th terrorist attack in Israel and subsequent war in the Middle East, which has seen a dramatic rise in antisemitism in the United Kingdom. The Commission on Antisemitism is being Co-Chaired by Lord John Mann and former Secretary of Defence Penny Mordaunt.
The Commission is investigating the rise of Antisemitism in the UK and will make far-reaching recommendations which will also encompass a comprehensive review of hate crime legislation and policing and prosecution, including public order and safety. It will encompass a sector-by-sector review of the failings in civil society since 7 October 2023, whether in the media, social-media, schools, academia, workplaces, trades unions, sport and culture.
It will also make recommendations on how best to tackle extremism, whether from Islamist sources, the far-right or far-left, and will investigate how interfaith work, training and education can be scaled up.
The Board of Deputies is inviting people to make written submissions, to showcase evidence of antisemitism in British society and/or provide robust recommendations for how antisemitism can be tackled by government, prosecutors, social media companies, educational institutions, trade unions, or other stakeholders. We welcome submissions from organisations and individuals that have been affected by or have dealt with antisemitism in the UK since October 7th. Submissions may also include examples of implementation of good practice.

Board of Deputies commends Government’s Iranian regime crackdown
Following an announcement by the Security Minister of new measures to tackle state threats from Iran, the Board of Deputies said:
“We welcome the Government’s decision to place the entire Iranian Regime, including its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, on an enhanced tier of the new foreign influence registration scheme. Among other important aspects of today’s announcements, those working for the Iranian regime in this country will be required to register as such, or face jail.
“We thank the Government for listening to the consistent warnings of British Jews about the threat the Iranian state poses to our community as well as to many Iranians who have found shelter in the UK.
“The Government’s announcement of a review into the UK’s counter-terrorism framework in relation to ‘modern day state threats’ is also an important step towards fulfilling intentions made clear in Opposition relating to national security, which included the proscription of the IRGC. We look forward to hearing the review’s recommendations in due course.”
