A lot of people say Enoch Powell was right with his ‘Rivers of blood’ speech, but what few of them realise is Powell’s family stole a lot of good Irish growing land hundreds of years ago, along with others from the British aristocracy and other privileged classes with connections to the Crown. The British PM at the start of the Irish famine was Robert Peel. He wanted to distribute surplus corn to the Irish (back then corn referred to all grain products)–lots of which were actually grown in Ireland as were other food crops, not just potatoes–but British landowners and farmers said the Corn Laws legally prevented him from doing so. The Corn Laws were introduced decades earlier as a tariff to guarantee grain prices to the growers, and issuing surplus grain would “crash” grain prices to lower than protected by law, which the government would have to pay. So Ireland had to starve because British landowners and farmers didn’t want lower grain prices and the British government didn’t want to fund food relief.
