Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Romania’s capital on Saturday in the latest anti-government demonstration by far-right groups after a top court canceled a presidential election in the European Union country last year.
Protesters converged in front of the government building in Bucharest, waving Romania’s tricolor flags and chanting slogans such as “Down with the Government!” and “Thieves”. Many expressed support for Calin Georgescu, who emerged as the frontrunner in December’s canceled election, and demanded they be resumed from the second round.
George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which organised the protest, told supporters on Saturday: “We are united, we are strong. We are here because our vote was stolen. Because democracy was trampled on.”
Simion told reporters that the protest aimed to “restore democracy and free elections” and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
“We do not trust that the upcoming elections will be free and fair,” he said.
A no-confidence vote on Friday, which was backed by AUR and two other far-right opposition parties, failed to unseat Ciolacu’s pro-Western coalition government, which was formed after a December 1 parliamentary election.
Romania has seen recurring protests after the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the election two days ahead of the December 8 runoff following Georgescu’s surprise win in the November 24 first round of the 2024 presidential election.
The far-right populist had polled in single digits and declared zero campaign spending. Allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference quickly emerged. Moscow has denied it meddled in Romania’s election.
On Wednesday, Romanian prosecutors launched a criminal investigation against Georgescu, accusing him of supporting fascist groups, “incitement to actions against the constitutional order,” and false declarations regarding electoral campaign financing and asset disclosures. Prosecutors have placed him under judicial control, according to his lawyers.
Georgescu, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, attended Saturday’s protest where he told supporters that “the system has maliciously tried to divide us” and that “old and new cronies tried to block my candidacy.”
The first round of the rerun of the election is scheduled for May 4. If no candidate gets more than 50% of ballots, a runoff will follow on May 18.
It isn’t yet clear whether Georgescu will be able to participate in the new election.
Maybe Romania will give a Ceaucescu Christmas to some of Europe’s unelected leaders. The gift will be ours but the surprise all theirs.

Only a few people in the West seem to be aware of all of the vote rigging going on. It is as if the masses are brainwashed to cast any such suspicions aside as absurd, or in light of the obvious they feel if they were to recognize the facts that their entire world would crumble. It is the same when trying to introduce the obvious facts of how the international bankster money power has been deliberately “debt-rigging” our nations for the past two hundred years, by inciting highly contrived wars, introducing development programs they cannot afford, so-called “free trade”, and all of the massive deficit financing as a result. The very phrase of “debt-rigging” is simply anathema to the media and to most minds, but all you have to do is read Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins in order to see the pattern of what that same international banking cartel, the major multinational corporations, together with our corrupt governments have done to third-world nations to “debt rig”, control and exploit them, which is exactly what they have done to us. The stealth is the same, and it all comes from the Anglo-American business ethic which has the built-in principal of making deals at the point of a gun, with the biggest gun being that power to make money out of nothing while with untold corruption delivering all of the insider favors to your friends.
People waking up and taking back control of their nations is clearly not in the interests of Israel, the US, the UK, the EU, China, India, Pakistan, Russia, or Israel.
After the ZOG US deal with Russia in giving it a nice hunk of the Ukraine for its getting out of Syria, the US will just keep destabilizing any nation and people trying to establish their own destinies, and betraying those it has befriended and is exploiting. Taiwan is the next nation the US will betray by bargaining it away with China in an effort to balance its debts as its collateral continues to disappear. Of course, they can’t just appear to give it away. There will have to be some staged conflict, forcing the US out, and then allowing China in on its own terms to purge away those who were the main resistors.

“Far right”, huh? If the people out in the streets were really far right, then politicians, bureaucrats, thieving bankers, and lying media scum would have been getting chased through the streets and executed, as they deserve. Instead, it looks like just another circle jerk.
