And what you end up with that kind of creed and thinking is a world run by monsters with no hope, and without any basis for really making it any better.
Epicurus solved no problems centuries ago. It is the classical “problem of evil” he allegedly cited, that if God is so all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful then how can he allow so much evil and suffering in the world. Why if he is all-knowing would he create beings he could foresee would disobey him and do evil. If so, then how can he be all-good. Is he not responsible for that evil and therefore either not all-knowing, all-powerful or not all-good?
The Christian answer is that he indeed is all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful but has allowed us to accept or reject him in our lives and in our choices. It is the same in the Old Testament. If the early Hebrews turned their backs on him, they were left to their own devices. But notice, there was always a purpose and a remnant of the faithful.
If one chooses to believe that the ultimate purpose of this life is finite and we are locked into this temporal order, then it ought not to matter if God who is eternal can foresee everything in advance, because everything we do and are, ultimately will be meaningless anyway – unless, of course, there is some eternal memory or imprint in the mind of God. It is that very doubt which restored the noble Hamlet from despair to his journey of faith to right the evils around him.
If our ultimate end is not finite despite our mortal natures, and if we have the opportunity as intelligent and conscious beings in sharing in the eternal life of God, even if it were only to be in his memory of what was pleasing in our lives to him, then despite the messes we have made down here, had we not better to start knowing more about him and to try better to connect with his presence in our lives?
Christians are not deterred by the so-called philosophical “problem of evil”. There are simply too many things they or anyone else are able to comprehend about God and even about the material world. Not that they should stop trying, but the fact is that they believe in him as all-powerful, all-good, and all-knowing, and the Lord of creation and love, simply because they have tried the faith, and it works. it works in transforming their lives and those who are genuine about it. Without that ultimate reverence there would be no real basis or surety for holy abandonment to him. In our human doubts, our limitations, our puny understanding, selfishness, mistrust, and our pride, there is no real surrender, self-abandonment, trust or faith, and no real fullness and enlightenment.

If there is no real freedom of choice or almighty God to choose, then “Evil” for Epicurus is only what he does not like, or desire, and it is entirely subjective and ultimately meaningless. If there is an objective and real evil, then it can only be relative to a real and objective good to have any real meaning. Evil even in this more objective sense cannot exist on its own. It is always parasitic on the good.
We say genocide and murder are objective evils, having to do with evil intentions and human foley, and we ask that if there is a God who can foresee what the Nazis, the communists or the Zionists would do, then why did he allow it, and in allowing it how can he be all-good. The answer is the same as if he had created us without the power of rejecting him and making messes of his order in our freedom, such that we were like automatons. If so, then we could never, and certainly from our own point of view, freely come to know and choose God with any kind of a genuine love, and to really “share” anything more eternal with him.
