Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said his country is “transforming the face of the Middle East” following the overthrow of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad.
Speaking at an evening press briefing, Netanyahu said Israel was defeating its enemies “step by step” in what he called an “existential war that has been imposed upon us.”
Netanyahu referred to al-Assad’s regime as a “central element of Iran’s axis of evil,” accusing Syria of promoting hatred against Israel, attacking during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and facilitating a “weapons pipeline” between Iran and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.
He said that the collapse of al-Assad’s regime was a “direct result” of Israel’s military actions against Iran and Iran-backed militias in the region, which include Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
However, he noted that Iran’s “axis of evil” has not yet disappeared. He said that Israel is “transforming the face of the Middle East” and that “the State of Israel is establishing its position as a centre of power in our region, as it has not been for decades.”
According to activists, Israel has been carrying out heavy attacks in Syria since al-Assad’s overthrow on Sunday.

Israel is pressing ahead with its aggression against Syria, targeting multiple army positions across the Arab nation.
The Israeli military said in a statement Tuesday that it carried out about 480 strikes over the past 48 hours on strategic military targets in Syria.
The regime’s military claimed that it struck facilities and that it struck most of the strategic weapons stockpiles in Syria.
The military said the targets included 15 naval vessels, anti-aircraft batteries and weapons production sites in several cities.
Also, reports suggest that weapons depots, navy vessels and a research center have been destroyed.
In Latakia, a navy vessel equipped with machine guns and rocket launchers was seen half sunken in the water.
“Israel’s attacks on Syria are systematic,” Al Jazeera reported from Damascus. “They are aiming to destroy Syria’s defense bases”.
The Al Jazeera report said Israel attacked airports in Homs, Qamishli, and Damascus as well as weapons depots and other strategic military sites.
“Israel claims it is doing this because it is concerned that these strategic facilities and military equipment could fall into the hands of the opposition,” said the report.
Mohammed al-Bashir, appointed as the country’s caretaker prime minister on Tuesday, has not reacted to the aggression.
Israel has also sent troops into a buffer zone east of the occupied Golan Heights. Still, the regime denies advancing towards Damascus, insisting that its forces were stationed within the zone.
Hundreds of Israeli strikes have been reported since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria.
As part of the wave of strikes, Israeli war minister Israel Katz said Israeli missile ships had destroyed the Syrian military fleet in an operation on Monday.
Condemnations are pouring in from across the world over the Israeli violation of Syria’s sovereignty.
The UN special envoy for Syria has called the Israeli attacks a deeply troubling development, describing the current situation in the Arab country as highly fluid.
Geir Pedersen said tensions remain unresolved and urged other countries to avoid actions that could impede the ongoing transformation.
Iran has criticized Western nations for their support of the Israeli regime and silence on such blatant violations.
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Qatar, Cuba, and Venezuela have all condemned Israel’s land grab near the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

Rayner ‘will clear Green Belt area the size of SURREY’ for new homes
Angela Rayner is set to allow construction on an area of Green Belt cumulatively larger than Surrey to meet Labour’s target of getting 3.5million homes built by 2030.
The Housing Secretary will tomorrow unveil a major planning overhaul that will allow construction on more of the buffer around major towns and cities. She is expected to widen the definition of what is classed ‘low quality Green Belt’ or ‘Grey Belt’ – which has often already been used for some development but which is still covered by the strictest classification.
Ms Rayner is taking a tough line over the changes, vowing to take on Not In My Back Yard (Nimby) campaigners and local authorities who throttle much needed housebuilding for the expected inrush of migrants expelled from the Middle east

It was another stop as Anthony Albanese continues his effort to connect with the Jewish community. He’s announced $8.5 million to redevelop the facility, and it comes after yet another incident in Sydney this morning. Crude words sprayed with black paint stand out on a white brick wall. The word Israel may have been misspelled, but in a community where many residents are Jewish, the message of anti-Semitism was clear.
Dvir Abramovich: This is a full-blown crisis, and let’s be clear, Woollahra is a warning to all of us, because if we allow this anti-Semitism to go unanswered, any street, any suburb, any community could be next.
Sarah Maunder: That’s Dr. Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission.
Dvir Abramovich: This is not just a Jewish issue. This is an Australian issue, because when one community is under attack, the entire nation’s soul is at stake.
Sarah Maunder: We’ve seen several anti-Semitic attacks in Australia in the past few weeks. Do you believe, or are you worried or concerned about the possibility that other people will see these attacks and take that as social license to do something similar?
Dvir Abramovich: Absolutely. Every time an act of anti-Semitism goes unpunished or unchallenged, it emboldens the next attacker. Silence is permission. Inaction is complicity. This isn’t a slippery slope. This is a free fall into a pit of hate, and we’re watching this happen in real time. And when anti-Semitism, when any kind of bigotry, when any kind of radicalism is normalised, it spreads like cancer.
Sarah Maunder: Today’s attack occurred in Woollahra, an eastern suburb of Sydney known to have a large Jewish population. Just three weeks ago, there was another anti-Semitic attack in the suburb. A car was set alight and a number of other vehicles vandalized with anti-Israel slogans. And in Melbourne, an arson attack on a Jewish synagogue is being investigated as a likely terrorist incident. Earlier this week, the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, announced a task force called Operation Avalite to investigate the rise of anti-Semitism in Australia. Today, Mr Albanese described the latest attack in Woollahra as an outrage.
Anthony Albanese: I’ve spoken with the AFP Commissioner Kershaw this morning. I’ll be briefed by AFP Operation Avalite officials as well. I stand with the Jewish community and unequivocally condemn this attack.
Sarah Maunder: Dr Josh Roose is an Associate Professor of Politics at Deakin University. He says anti-Semitic sentiment has been on the rise in Australia and around the world over the past decade, with a significant increase after October 7 last year, when the Israel-Hamas war began with a terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel.
Josh Roose: And so what we have seen is a real momentum built out and that occurs both in public space but also online. And it’s the online environment in particular where some of the most vitriolic hate-filled material is being spread and then arguably leaking over into the offline world.
Sarah Maunder: The Prime Minister has announced a task force to investigate the rise of anti-Semitism in Australia. Do you think there are other things that should be done?
Josh Roose: It’s a step in the right direction. However, this goes a lot more broadly than the narrow remit of a task force. This speaks to a wider challenge of societal polarisation. We know that anti-Semitism is the tip of the spear for a lot of hatred directed at minorities in times of economic crisis, in times of significant social flux. And we really are in that period at the moment when we look at, for example, the cost of living crisis. When people are struggling and when there’s flux and uncertainty, people often look for someone to blame. Historically, anti-Semitism has been a significant challenge for that reason.
Sarah Maunder: Dr Dvir Abramovich welcomes the task force but he’s worried it won’t be enough.
Dvir Abramovich: This is like putting a bandage on a wound that’s already been infected. And I think the Prime Minister could have done more. This will be, I think, rightly perceived by many as reactive damage control. And the task force is welcome, for example, but why did it take a wave of attacks? And why did it take the destruction of a synagogue for us to get here? So if the PM wants to show real leadership, I think he needs to make anti-Semitism a national priority, not just a talking point.
Sarah Maunder: He explains the rise of anti-Semitism should worry all Australians.
Dvir Abramovich: There would be people who would ask, anti-Semitism is a problem of the Jews, why should we worry about this? And my response is that anti-Semitism is a virus that infects entire society. When anti-Semitism rises, it’s a warning that something is very, very wrong. And a society that allows anti-Semitism to flourish will eventually unravel into chaos. And as Simon Wiesenthal, the Nazi hunter, once said, it may begin with the Jews, but it never ends with the Jews. So this is a fight that is not just a Jewish fight, it’s an Australian fight.
Sarah Maunder: No arrests have been made in relation to today’s attack in Sydney, but police say they want to speak to two people who were in the vicinity at the time.
