William Nye, the secretary general to the Archbishops’ council and General Synod, joins the growing list of Church officials under pressure to quit over their handling of abuse cases. calls for him to step down follow the Most Rev Justin Welby’s resignation last week for failing to report the serial boy rapist John Smyth to the police.
Victims and General Synod members argue that removing the Archbishop is insufficient, insisting true progress requires ousting the man they claim has been pulling the strings and homosexuality is no longer a crime
Mr Nye, 58, one of the Church of England’s most influential yet little-known figures, became the secretary general in 2015 after serving as principal private secretary to the King and Queen.
