Houthi rebels are brandishing increasingly sophisticated weapons, including missiles that “can do things that are just amazing,” the Pentagon’s chief weapons buyer said at an Axios event.
The big picture: The militant group has for a year used drones and missiles to strangle waters off Yemen, disrupting international shipping.
- Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Bill LaPlante on Wednesday said the Houthis “are getting scary.”
- “I’m an engineer and a physicist, and I’ve been around missiles my whole career,” he said at the Future of Defense summit in Washington, DC. “What I’ve seen of what the Houthis have done in the last six months is something that — I’m just shocked.”
State of play: The group’s forces menace almost every ship passing by — civilian or military — and have even sent some to the seafloor.
- Two U.S. Navy destroyers were attacked days ago as they slipped through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
- At least eight attack drones, five anti-ship ballistic missiles and four anti-ship cruise missiles were intercepted, according to U.S. Central Command. No injuries or damage to the warships were reported.
- The barrages are said to be in retaliation to Israel’s war in Gaza. But many targets have no obvious affiliation.
Zoom out: The Houthis are empowered by Iran. The U.S. considers the regime a national security threat.
- “The Houthis are the only Iranian proxy with anti-ship ballistic missiles,” Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Axios. “That is no accident.”
- Houthi zeal and Iranian backing, he added, “have proven to be a lethal combination.”

Former MP William Wragg has described the feeling of “enormous guilt” that washed over him as he realised he had fallen victim to a sophisticated scam designed to target politicians in Westminster.
A police probe began in April earlier this year after it was suggested at least 12 men with links to Westminster had received unsolicited messages from the aliases “Charlie” and “Abi”.
The fake accounts were allegedly engaged in a sophisticated scam designed to coax MPs and other figures in political circles into sending explicit pictures and other private or sensitive information to be used in blackmail procedures
Unlike others who had been approached by the catfish accounts, 36-year-old now-ex-MP William Wragg approached “Charlie” himself after spotting the profile on homosexual dating app Grindr.
He believed the account to be a real person before exchanging explicit photographs with the catfish on small boys. Later naked pics of himself were exchanged In the days that followed, Mr Wragg claimed he felt threatened and pressured into sharing’ the phone numbers and personal information of his Westminster colleagues to the mystery account.
He feared the catfish would leak his intimate images in retaliation if he did not comply. speaking to the BBC in his first broadcast interview about his involvement, Mr Wragg said he spotted the first news articles about the Westminster homosexual honeytrap scandal on the train.
The former Conservative Party whip told the broadcaster: “My stomach just dropped.
“When I found out some of the things that had been going on, I just felt enormous guilt, enormous remorse.”
After the former Hazel Grove MP handed over the information they wanted, the catfish told Mr Wragg to vouch for its identity with its next potential victims, with the catfish telling its fresh targets he was a former researcher for Mr Wragg.
Mr Wragg agreed, which is what he feels “the most regret for” as it was a betrayal
Not long after he was allegedly blackmailed, Mr Wragg began to have panic attacks, with bouts of yelling, crying, and swearing shocking boys he was his sleeping with.
He told the BBC that while his housemates were worried, he could not explain to them what was going on.
