Growing up in project housing in the sixties was pretty grim for me. The most exciting thing for me was when the Beatles released a new single or album.
If you know a bit about music theory, you will understand about chords and their relationship to each other. The very clever people who composed Beatle music had this knowledge and wrote these clever songs that could easily bring me to tears.
There is a song that could nearly be played without leaving the same fret. (Your Mother Should Know). A song that steadily climbs up the fret board G, Am, Bm, C, etc. (Here There And Everywhere).
When I was younger I was in awe of these songs until I started listening to the words. For instance: How could those two long haired losers from Liverpool understand the anguish parents have on discovering their young daughter has absconded from home to meet a man from the motor trade at the age they were when they supposedly wrote the song?
And of course there is the poison inserted at the end when whoever wrote the words for the song had the temerity to blame the parents. Because, you know, girlz just wanna have fun. Always with the agenda.
There is something magical about Beatles music. And it somewhat mitigated the misery of being brought up in a shit-hole housing scheme. But forget about the lyrics.
