The family of a Christian Israeli soldier killed in Gaza has been asked to replace the headstone on his grave because it had a cross on it, Israeli media reported on Tuesday.
David Bogdanovskyi was killed in December during Israel’s assault on Gaza and was buried at the Haifa military cemetery,
His family told Israeli media that they were ordered by the Public Council for Commemoration of Fallen Soldiers in the defence ministry to either remove the headstone from the grave or have him reburied outside the cemetery.
The family said the request had come after complaints by Jewish families who had claimed the cross offended them and affected their ability to pray in the cemetery.
Bogdanovskyi’s mother said she discovered her son’s headstone was covered after visiting his grave during a ceremony for those killed on 7 October, saying she felt humiliated.
“The cross engraved on his headstone was an integral part of his personal identity and the faith,” she said in a Facebook post.
The defence ministry said it was legally prohibited to place a cross or any other religious symbol on a military headstone, adding it was “especially important” because Jewish soldiers were also buried in the same cemeteries.
It also cited the Israeli army’s Chief Rabbi, who said the cross harms the holiness of the Jewish cemetery.
The soldier’s headstone was covered with a black cloth for several months.
In Israel, cemeteries are generally separated by religion, but a law passed in 2013 enabled non-Jewish soldiers to be buried with Jewish soldiers in military cemeteries.
Bogdanovskyi and several other members of the Israeli army were reportedly killed after an anti-tank missile hit a vehicle they were in Khan Younis.
The same month, the Israeli army began advancing into the area, including Jabalia and Shujaiya, pushing civilians to the south of the Gaza Strip, where over 42,000 people – mostly women and children, have been killed.
Jewish racism even applies to the dead.
Ironic that a Christian soldier would fight and die for people who hate him and his religion.
If only the American soldiers who are about to die to save the Jews actually knew what the Jews thought of them and how much they hate them.

Second, some christians falsely claim that jesus was murdered by the so called jews, so why would a cross be engraved in the head stone of this christian zionist soldier. Of course it would be offensive to the so called jews in the area since a cross makes the jews feel guilty. Christians of the day have to stop blaming the so called jews for the killing of jesus. Sure, jesus is portrayed as standing for humanity and morality but so do other jews stand up for good as well. And the whole of bibles are composed mostly vilolent passages, fables without archeological evidence, and it all happened so long ago. Let’s move on to cohesion on all sides and will bring peace and prosperity for all.

This article is misleading. Sergeant Bogdanovskyi, who was nineteen years old, was the son of Ukrainian jewish parents, who migrated to Israel in 2013.
The law, cited above, allowing for the burial of non-jewish combatants of the IDF alongside their jewish comrades, applies only to non-jews who are eligible for full rights as an Israeli National, according to the provisions of the Law of Return.
With a jewish mother and father, Bogdanovskyi would have been considered an ethnic but non-halakhic jew.
The 2013 law, regarding military cemetaries, was introduced precisely to allow the inclusive burial of non-halakhic sons of eastern european jews serving in the IDF, in the expectation of their future conversion.
Sergeant Bogdanovskyi clearly had some residual affection for the cross, even if it were just nostalgic.
As a mere citizen of Israel, however, Bogdanovskyi, was exempt from military conscription. Only jews, druze and circassians can be drafted in Israel. The deceased “christian soldier” was, therefore, a volunteer in the IDF. He was not compelled to fight. He chose to. It was his fealty to Zion that lead him into the field, not Jesus.
