The United States has struck Houthi weapons sites in Yemen for the first time using B-2 stealth bombers.
The warplanes targeted five underground storage sites in the strikes, Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, said late on Wednesday.
“This was a unique demonstration of the United States’s ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried underground, hardened, or fortified,” he said.
Mr Austin said the use of B-2 long-range bombers was an example of “US global strike capabilities”, in what could be seen as a veiled threat to Iran.
While the defence secretary made no reference to the Islamic republic, the warplanes are the only aircraft capable of striking Tehran’s deeply buried nuclear facilities.
The B-2 Spirit, the radar-evading bat-wing warplane, is normally used by the Pentagon as a show of force.
The $1 billion aircraft can carry the Pentagon’s largest weapons and relies on mid-air refuelling to carry out missions without landing.
They would have flown from their usual base in Missouri or been launched from a base closer to Yemen.
The US has about 19 of the aircraft, which are permanently based at Whiteman Air Force Base, although they have been deployed on exercises in the Pacific and Indian oceans.
The strikes on the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels came after Tehran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel.
The Houthis have been targeting commercial vessels and military warships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in response to Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
The Iranian-backed terror group has used a wide array of missiles and drones to carry out their attacks.
“We will continue to make clear to the Houthis that there will be consequences for their illegal and reckless attacks,” Mr Austin said.

Like some have said, flying those bombers from Missouri across an ocean and a continent might not be a sign of strength but of weakness. If they had to resort to such logistics to attack a target it means they had nothing on those carriers, those floating cities, that could handle that job. A multi-billion dollar aircraft to take on a “lesser” army? That’s why they needed a coalition of many nations just to take on Iraq.
For a belligerent nation the US is a piss-poor fighting force. It’s like some kid looking for trouble, then when he finds it and realises he’s stirred up too much he brings his dad round.

The U.S. Air Force used air bases in Australia to support the strikes on Houthi weapons bunkers in Yemen by B-2 stealth bombers earlier this week. At this point, there is some confusion as to whether B-2s were among the aircraft that used Australian bases, but USAF tankers likely supported the bombers, launching refueling operations from Australian soil. Regardless, the development reflects the expanding military and strategic alliance between the United States and Australia, which has included upgrades for Australian air bases, specifically to better accommodate U.S. bombers.
The Australian Department of Defense has confirmed that Australian support for the U.S. strikes on Yemen on the night of October 16/17 did include “access and overflight for U.S. aircraft in northern Australia.”
A report from Australia’s national broadcaster ABC stated that “A remote Northern Territory air base has been used as a staging post for this week’s major U.S. airstrike on underground Houthi weapons stores in Yemen.”
This could point to Royal Australian Air Force Base Tindal, a remote installation south of Darwin, which has been receiving upgrades to better accommodate U.S. bomber deployments, as you can read about here. The work is projected to be completed in late 2026. Available low-resolution satellite imagery for the dates in question doesn’t show any B-2s at Tindal — which is not conclusive in itself — but there are other possible operating locations in northern Australia, including some auxiliary installations.

I believe the B-2 Stealth Bombers were staged from the secret island in the Indian Ocean about 1500 kms south of the Arabian peninsula. This secret island is called Diego Garcia. Some of us believe that Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 ended up there and did not crash into the sea north of Kuala Lumpur!

If US stealth aircraft are as effective as the were in Serbia – where one was shot down by a supposedly inferior enemy – they won’t be a problem for more sophisticated states like Iran, China and Russia.
